Obama's World War II history
Obama's World War II history

Earlier, the Republican National Committee http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0508/Soldiers_in_the_family.html">pounced on Obama's improbable statement that an uncle had served in the unit that liberated Auschwitz.

In fact, campaign spokesman Bill Burton says, his great uncle was a member of the 89th Infantry Division that liberated the Ohrduf camp, part of Buchenwald and according to the http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/article.php?lang=en&ModuleId=10006140">Holocaust Museum, the first concentration camp liberated by U.S. troops.

The soldier in question, Burton said, is Obama's grandmother's brother, who's still alive.

UPDATE: "Senator Obama’s family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II – especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald. Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically," Burton says.

1. The important thing is he has a relative who liberated a NAZI CAMP
Doesn't matter that he doesn't know WHICH ONE ... Geez, how many
of the same people who are giving Obama grief over this would even
KNOW that Buchenwald WAS a concentration camp????

2. well, we can't possibly have him as POTUS then, can we?
I mean, not being able to tell one famous concentration camp from another! :sarcasm:

Next thing you know he'll be plagiarizing recipes!

Can anyone say "feeding frenzy?" People are getting awfully desperate. I hope he doesn't break wind noisily some day; we'll be hearing replays of it for weeks.

3. The fact was right, the locale was wrong
So maybe Hillary was under sniper attack on some OTHER air base. Maybe Bosnia. Or New Hampshire.

Hillary, my hero!

It was technically his GREAT-uncle, not his uncle!

Can you believe some people are trying to make a big deal out of this?

9. And to be fair it was a story his great uncle told him, not a policy position he is studying now.
The Right looks like fools again. BUT, I have to say that because of this smear (and it is a smear, because they accused Obama of lying when in reality, he got the general story right, that his great uncle liberated a concentration camp), I have learned more on the history of Ohrdruf camp, and of what a hero Obama's great uncle is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohrdruf_forced_labor_camp

After his visit, Eisenhower cabled General George C. Marshall, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, describing his trip to Ohrdruf:

. . .the most interesting--although horrible--sight that I encountered during the trip was a visit to a German internment camp near Gotha. The things I saw beggar description. While I was touring the camp I encountered three men who had been inmates and by one ruse or another had made their escape. I interviewed them through an interpreter. The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and bestiality were so overpowering as to leave me a bit sick. In one room, where they were piled up twenty or thirty naked men, killed by starvation, George Patton would not even enter. He said that he would get sick if he did so. I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to 'propaganda.'

Go to the link to view pictures of what the camp looked like when the Americans entered it. Not for the faint of heart.

10. Geez....
...the same coots who are up in arms about this--are the same pathetic
apologizers who rationalized Hillary's Bosnian sniper fire trauma as "a slight slip
of the tongue."

Ironical.

11. Eeewww!
Check out Smith's earlier post on the subject > http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0508/Soldiers_in_the_family.html

In that post he writes:

CBS and the Washington Post yesterday reported that Obama had cited an uncle who, according to family lore, was among those who liberated Auschwitz.

As a conservative blogger points out, that's unlikely

Guess who the conservative blogger is? Ace of Spades.

Eeewwww. Vile. Ick. Ack. Phooey!

Same RNC.

14. See how lucky McCain is? He has Lieberbush to whisper in his ear
every time he puts his foot in his mouth. (That, by the way, is why I'm betting Holy Joe will be McSame's VP candidate.) The Pukes would do well to let misstatements pass with little fanfare because their half senile candidate is sure to produce some doozies.

19. If saying Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald raise questions about
Obama's "judgment and his readiness to lead as commander in chief", as the head of the RNC stated, then imagine what kinds of questions about McSame must be raised by his continual confusion of Shiite and Sunni.

I really hope they go there.
