I put it into historical perspective. A witness who miss-represents events, willfully or not, as part of a central claim is much more problematic that someone who relays a story that is best peripheral to the claim. Unless Obama had no relative who served in WWI--no one who experienced the horrors of that war--than his mistake is forgivable. He did not claim that he himself liberated Auschwitz, or a concentration camp, or suggested that he hid in the attic with shell-shock. In his speech, he claims this was a story relayed to him, not part of his primary experiences.
