How about Sen. Sherrod Brown (OH) for VP??
Edited on Wed May-28-08 11:28 PM by BluegrassDem
I hadn't seen his name mentioned anywhere, though he's got some major upside. Is something obviously wrong with him that keeps him out of the discussion? From what I know of him, he's kinda like John Edwards in his appeal to blue collar workers, unions, etc. And being from Ohio can't hurt. He's a freshmen senator, but he's been in Congress for a while, so it's not like he's green. He's also remained neutral during the entire race, which could be a good thing to help unify the party.

2. I like that idea. What's the process to replace him in the Senate? Does the Dem Gov of Ohio make the
appointment?

3. There is an awful lot to admire in Senator Brown. I would imagine
progressives in Ohio would be reluctant to let him go, but if he turned out to be President-Elect Obama's choice for veep, then I'm on board with bells, banners, and butterscotch pie.

4. No senators for anything, but senator. We need to get to 61.
We're already losing one no matter how you toss it.

12. Is it faster to China or by bus? Whut?
Governors are not in the senate and don't have anything to do with my argument that we need more democratic senators.

Perhaps you are suggesting that the democratic governor of Ohio could appoint a democratic replacement senator. I don't know Ohio's rules, but there is still something to say for seniority. If he's that good (and I believe that he is), let's keep him where he can do some real good and build-up his options in the senate.

5. I have to say - that's rather BRILLIANT!
I'm pretty sure that Gov. Strickland picks his replacement, and, Brown is a very liberal man and hard working (Edwards type) Union backing guy!

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT IDEA!!!

If I could rec this 500 times I would!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7. I'm just rather shocked that he's not being mentioned AT ALL
Edited on Wed May-28-08 11:37 PM by BluegrassDem
I can't find nothing but upside for him. He's a lot better VP choice than some of the other names being bantered around. Sherrod Brown is a lunch pail kinda guy. He's also very progressive and the unions love him. He's really like John Edwards except from Ohio. He's a young enough guy to be able run on his own in 2016 as well. It's almost a no-brainer to me, especially if Gov. Strickland can appoint his replacement.

6. You answered it yourself: He's a freshmen senator
Brown is a solid guy, but two freshmen senators is one too many.

8. Yeah, but wasn't he a congressman for several terms though?
Freshman senator evokes someone who has just arrived in Washington. Brown knows the halls of DC, so it's not like he's unexperienced or new to the political scene in DC, like Claire McCaskill for example.

9. He voted for the Military Commissions Act
which took away Habeas Corpus.

In addition, his hair is messy, he has terrible posture, and when he talks he sounds like he's growling.

13. He's an Ivy League (Yale) graduate...
and his wife Connie Schultz, is a Pulitzer winner on the Cleveland Plain Dealer. They're a terrific couple, but I think we need him in the Senate more than in the WH. He's got a big future IMHO. Posture? Hair? Could use a better tailor, plus he's much more interested in matters of substance, unlike the many rug-wearers and the too-pretty (John Boehner comes to mind, as does Trent Lott and a whole herd of Repukes.)

BTW, I'm from SW Ohio, where two of the worst reps, Steve Chabot and Jeanne Schmidt are, God&Allah willing, going down in flames in November. Steve Driehaus (OH-1) and Vic Wulsin (OH-2) are real, quality candidates, no matter the standard smears employed by local RW radio and print media...there's an oxymoron! Media? No, propagandists! BTW GObama!

janeaustin, such trivial comments, unless you're being "funny." He voted for the MC act to deny the repukes an issue which they would have used against him..."America-hater" and all that shit. It was strictly a tactical vote and I at least understand his reasoning.

14. I'm sorry you think that was trivial.
Looking and sounding "Presidential" are important in this televised world.

Nobody who looks like a stereotypical absent-minded professor can get the votes of a majority of Americans.

Me, I kind of like the look, but I lived right next to the University of Texas for 27 years. :)

On the Military Commissions Act - We got the Iraq War Resolution because of Dems who were afraid of giving Republicans an issue to use against them.

I understand why he did it, but he didn't show the courage to uphold the Constitution that I think is a requirement for Congress members.

He should have voted to uphold Habeas Corpus and made educating the electorate on the subject the centerpiece of his campaign.
