Wow, youth and minority turnout is huge so far!
Edited on Thu May-29-08 11:43 AM by beat tk
Any thoughts on what Latino turnout is going to look like in November?
Notice any trends in your neighborhood?

Apparently, 76% of Latino voters in the Primary elections so far have voted Democratic.

I found this fivethirtyeight.com post informative, and have customized one image for GDPers to stare at without the hassle of actually leaving DU.
But here's the link for those intrepid enough to click on it....

1. I dare people to comment on this thread even though it's not about "Obamatrons" and "Hillbots."

11. In my experience, people often don't vote because their state is solid (R) or (D). I wish there was
some way to let people know that the national popular vote is really important this year.

5. While not explicitly about either candidate
I am sure some will read into the youth and minority vote as being Obama biased, despite the inclusion of Latinos in the latter category. Regardless, we should all be happy about these numbers. Minorities and young voters are two of the strongest blocks for Democrats in terms of the proportions that vote for Democrats. Increasing the turnout here pays much bigger dividends than does pushing other voter blocks that do not vote as heavily for Democrats.

10. The Latinos I have meet in my neighborhood
Are excited about voting, most are first time voters and
in the building trades. The high gas prices are really effecting
their professions and normal Sunday Drive, ( they go to the church, park, friends, relatives)

I signed up 4 first time voters, in their mid or late 20s, at my neighbor's house in March.

No way they would vote for a Republican, NO WAY.

13. The largest amount of undervoting is among Latinos and that appears to be changing.
That's essential to flipping the southwest.

14. I agree, and will be following the campaigns there closely. As the 538 piece says, if the Democrats
carry CO, NM, and NV, they probably won't need Florida or Ohio to win.

beautiful thing, indeed.

18. As our party struggles to finalize the primary votes in Michigan and Florida, I think your hope is
just the thing to stay focused on.
Voting when it counts.
To think some people (the "Carville carnival") are talking about RE-voting in Michigan and Florida right now, while the rest of us are trying to rally voters for the Fall... unbelievable.

20. It IS beautiful! Youth turnout doubled in Mississippi! I remember phonebanking there, several people
said that I should be calling their kids because they were all about Obama.
The kids haven't really been in the phonebanks as far as I can tell, so Obama's 50 state voter registration will be super important. As far as I know, the Republicans aren't planning anything like that, so... I tentatively put forth... that youth turnout could be the real "swing vote" this time.

(By swing vote, I mean that they swing between voting Democratic and not voting, as opposed to swinging between the two parties.)
