The case for unity.
The political season is an ugly one.

We have two candidates sparring with each other, but both have resorted to different methods in doing so. One has obviously taken the high road and has avoided confrontation. The other has dirtied his or her hands (I will leave it up to you to decide which!) in this political scuffle.

Yet this political season may actually be more civil than it appears. The candidates are two of the strongest politicians that the Democratic Party has to offer. Both have largely left personal attacks at the door. The one candidate making attacks has largely doomed his or her candidacy by his or her own doing. But even so, this candidate has not made an opportunistic personal attack when a similar candidate from the Republican Party might have done so in the same situation. Two wrongs do not make a "Wright".

Both have talked strongly about party unity after the political process is done. One candidate has made a strong and respectful appeal to let the other finish the race, and the other has vowed to fight which might lead to on to his or her unfortunate political demise.

Therefore, I anticipate a united democratic party is up to the voters -- whether either side can leave bitterness aside and forgive the other's lack of political foresight. Two sides must converge and meet on middle ground.

So I propose a toast to unity. As the battle of November draws nearer, it is important to leave trivial political matters aside and to remember that each side is composed of individuals whose opinions are as valid or rational as the other's. Above all, it is important to remember that the presidential season is not simply a game in which one candidate mercilessly stomps on the other; the purpose of the political season, rather, is ultimately to determine which vision is best in preparing the country for the tumultuous years ahead.

1. Here's my idea of unity: Hillary accepts that Obama has won and she has lost, so do
her supporters, and they start supporting him and stop tearing him down and presenting arguments intended to weaken him in the General Election (he can't win, whites won't vote for him, he might get assassinated, how many more Wrights does he have in his closet, he's not a Muslim "as far as I know", McCain passes the commander-in-chief "threshold" and Obama doesn't, Obama is an elitist, Obama is unpatriotic, Obama has a Jew problem, etc. etc.). That's the only "unity" I want to see.

2. Good Post.
I supported Hillary but determined as early as Wisconsin that it was probably over. I started to have doubts when my home state of Maine went so big for Obama.

I will actively and enthusiastically support our nominee. Both ChicaAzul and I are still sorry that it didn't work out for Hillary, but we will have an outstanding ticket headed by Obama and whoever (I hope Wes Clark).

As a contrast the rethugs offer john mccain = more of the same. No thanks.

I SOOO look forward to being able to point to the president and tell my son that we can be proud!

My biggest hope here is that the venom fests here that have done so much to marginalize this website come to an end, that Hillary supporters won't be sore losers and Obama supporters won't be sore winners.

PEACE!

3. Yes and a salute to the supporters of one of the candidates who
have continued to support their candidate without attacking the candidate most likely to be the nominee for the General Elecion.

And to those who have either already switched or have quietly prepared to do so.

4. Unfortunately, "unity" has become the punch line to a cynical joke.
Kind of like FoxNoise and "Fair and Balanced".

5. Not with Hillary. I would be thrilled if she would leave the party....
She's in the Lieberman League now. I would be thrilled if she left the Democratic Party.

She and her bigot pandering, Bush/Rove tactics and assassination shout-out has defiled our party. Nothing would make me happier than to see her leave the party.
