Obama takes heat from Catholic League over Pfleger
For a post-racial, kumbaya, can't we all come together candidate, Obama hangs out with the strangest people. Looks like the Catholic League questions his judgment. So do I. So, maybe, will the Supers.

He wasn't speaking in behalf of Obama, and how the fuck was Obama supposed to know anything about it?

And why blame Obama for one of THEIR people? I'm Catholic and frankly I'm pissed at him -- he KNOWS the flak that it was going to cause. Another ego talking, I think.

This campaign is all about blaming the other guy -- everybody's a victim. It's disgusting.

Edited on Fri May-30-08 04:55 PM by global1
Obama. It was the Chicago Archdiocese of the Catholic Church that put this priest in a parish and gave him a platform for which to practice his activism. Obama has nothing to do with this. I don't understand why the Catholic League would come down on Obama. Are they upset with what this Pleger said? Or what?

This is so stupid. Obama should just ignore this as it's not worth dignifying.

24. I can't control what priests speak at my church, and neither can Barack.
I admit, most of the guest priests at my church are simply people I can't understand. We have guests from China, India, Mexico, Packistan, etc. I respect them for having learned another language, but I don't enjoy sitting there during a usually long sermon where I don't understand anything they say! This far out priest who spoke at the church Barack usually attends is a whack job and certainly doesn't represent ANY catholic teachings I've ever heard, nor have I EVER heard any priest say things like he did!

Truthfully, I think the media would better serve the public by comparing sermons by Falwell, Robertson, Hagee, Parsley & the like to Wright & Pfleger. At least they'd be comparing apples with apples!

Here are a couple of other positions you probably share your buddy, Bill Donahue:

"Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. It's not a secret, okay? And I'm not afraid to say it. … Hollywood likes anal sex. "

or

“As for the alleged abuse, it’s time to ask some tough questions. First, there is a huge difference between being groped and being raped, so which was it Mr. Foley? Second, why didn’t you just smack the clergyman in the face? After all, most 15-year-old teenage boys wouldn’t allow themselves to be molested. So why did you?”

70. More about your hero:
Who is Catholic League president William Donohue?:

William A. Donohue, president of the conservative Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, has made 23 guest appearances on TV news programs in 2004. Donohue uses his appearances primarily to attack gays and progressives. He has referred to the "gay death style," remarked, "God forbid we'd run out of little gay kids," claimed that Senator John Kerry "never found an abortion he couldn't justify," and claimed that "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular ... Hollywood likes anal sex."

RW hate monger.

73. Catholic League was started with the backing of Paul Weyrich....
(Free Congress Foundation, Heritage Foundation, perennial ScaifeFoundations fundee), who wanted to use gullible Catholics to build his political influence empire.

This was at the same time the FCF was backing death squads and genocidal dictators in Chile, El Salvador/Nicaragua and RENAMO group.

This man never made a peep about McCain's butt- buddy, Rev. Hagee's "...the Catholic church is the Great Whore.." speech, because, you see, McCain is a Republican.

Yet when some numbnuts preacher gives a sermon in Chicago while Obama is 2000 miles away, Donahue has the audaucity to issue a press release blasting him.

(And...sigh... DUers quote him approvingly)

95. The Catholic League can go to hell
It is one of the most shameful organizations associated to the Catholic Church. I'm still kinda a Catholic, and they just fill me with disgust. I couldn't give a rat's ass about what they think. I'm not a fan of Catholic bashing by any standard and am a BIG fan of religious tolerance, but these guys take it to a new level and seek to find anti-Catholic sentiment in everything, which is usually just a result of their extreme ignorance.

To be honest, it's things like Pfleger, and his uniqueness, that ocassionally make me believe that the Catholic Church could come back one day from the brink and serve a useful purpose again.

Then I'll come back too.

David

101. The Obots' (perhaps) fatal flaw
Anything that slams Hillary must be right; ergo, Pfleger is a saint and perfectly right to do what he did and say what he said.

What they stubbornly refuse to see is anything negative, even if it negatively impacts their candidate! Pfleger didn't have to do this; AT BEST it was piss-poor judgment because it's going to come back to haunt his protege in the same way that Jeremiah Wright did! But nooooooo, they fall all over themselves justifying Pfleger's comedy routine!

This is going to hurt Obama, needlessly. The guy all but has the nomination; instead of spreading a bunch of divisive crap that is ONLY going to scare more of the bejeezus out of white voters (whom he IS GOING TO NEED in the general election), Obama should be reaching out to the voters who are hopefully going to put him in office! Instead, he's once again playing defense. If you have to explain something, play defense, you've already lost.

That's why this matters.

103. When someone is quoting a fascist reactionary like Donahue of the Catholic League, there is
no argument to be made.

Posting this article is basically the same as telling me that Goebbels thinks Obama sucks.

It's only going to make me wonder why that person is allying themselves with Goebbels -- NOT worry about why Goebbels thinks Obama sucks.

Bill Donahue is fascist windbag of the lowest order, and for someone to use such a source to tear down a Democrat on a Democratic board is outrageous and despicable. It has nothing to do with defending or not defending Pfleger's antics.

Peace,
sw

107. Do you ever stop and think?
Or do you just see "Donohue" and immediately jujp off the cliff?

Donohue IS a pig; I think we all agree on that. THE POINT, in case you missed it, is that several days later we're still talking about Pfleger instead of talking about the candidates and the issues.

IF YOU HAVE TO DEFEND OR EXPLAIN, YOU'VE ALREADY LOST. That's the point.

If you want to talk about the issues then talk about the issues, but if Hillary supporters want to bring this crap up then they have no business accusing Obama supporters of not being able to focus on the issues.

That's not the point. The point is, we're still talking about Pfleger's antics days later!

That means we're not the DEMOCRATIC message out, because we're still talking about bullshit. If you have to defend or explain, you're off-message, and that means you lost the day.

the Catholic League—or the Catholic Church, for that matter—forfeited their right to ever be nonplussed, offended, indignant, insulted or affronted over anything, ever again, when they oversaw decades of thousands of cases of institutionalized child rape and covered it up. Fuck them.
