Clinton clarifies her case

Clinton clarifies her case

Ken Vogel sends over some quotes from Clinton's appearance in Yankton, SD, in which she clarified her case for staying: That she's won the popular vote and Obama had won the delegate count, and an argument can now ensue over which is fairer.

Tomorrow is the last day of the primaries and the beginning of a new phase in the campaign. After South Dakota and Montana vote I will lead in the popular vote and Senator Obama will lead in the delegate count. The voters will have voted and so the decision will fall to the delegates empowered to vote at the Democratic Convention. I will be spending the coming days making my case to those delegates. Their responsibility not only to the Democratic Party but to our country is to vote for the candidate who is best able to lead us to victory in November and best prepared to lead our country into the future.

We have a very strong case to make that I am the best positioned to take back the White House and put this country on the right track. That’s what this is all about. After all our country has been through we cannot afford four more years of failed Republican policy.

So here’s the case that I will be making over the coming days. We have won the popular vote which best represents the will of the people, more people have voted for me than any other candidate in the history of presidential primaries. We are winning the swing states and the swing voters that Democrats must win to take back the White House. And in every poll that has been done independently in the last several months I am beating John McCain in the key states. I have proven that I have what it takes to get the 270 electoral votes that is required to win back the White House.

The problem is that Clinton hasn't won the popular vote by any accepted measure, only by the one that tilts further her way. And superdelegates show no sign of accepting her count.

Good grief!

She's not gonna stop.

If I'm wrong, I'll gleefully eat that crow!

I knew that she wasn't going to give this up. She's going to burn the whole damn thing down in a fit.

7. gately, from americablog.com: (They have tons of gov't, etc. connections)

From Ben Smith:

Ken Vogel reports from the Clinton bubble a Clinton spokesman is pushing back on the notion of a concession soon, something even many of her aides and top supporters now expect. Hillary Clinton will not drop out of the presidential race Tuesday or in several days that follow, the spokesman,Mo Elleithee, said Monday afternoon. "It's pretty clear that she's not conceding," Elleithee told reporters on Clinton's campaign plane en route from Rapid City, S.D. to Sioux City, Iowa.

Instead, Elleithee said Clinton would be "aggressively courting" superdelegates and "putting together the next phase of the campaign," which he said could include campaign events around the country.

More from ABC:

When asked why Clinton was spending tomorrow in New York at an event the campaign is calling a "victory party," Clinton’s spokesperson said, “it’s a good way to close out this phase of the campaign is come to New York bring all of her supporters together, have a big celebratory election night party as we move into the next phase of the campaign which is obviously the courting of these delegates.”

:scared:

OT: I posted a link about Senator Byrd - there's probably more than one by now. If you haven't seen anything on it yet, apparently he was hospitalized for lethargy and sluggishness.

I looked up what those could be symptoms for, but the list was almost endless, so decided not to post and to just let his doctors (rather than us here at DU :7) make the diagnosis.

:(:

10. She's issuing statements indicating she has no plans to concede.
She's still lying about the popular vote. She didn't have to clarify her position because people were speculating.

Why not just quit the posturing if she plans on conceding tomorrow or the next day?

11. John Edwards was talking about going all the way to the convention...
the day before he dropped out. But, I am not sure what Hillary is going to do tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised at all if she starts yelling about going to Denver.

12. reflex - habit - Its somewhat ironic but since Penn left the campaign her message
has gotten more superficial and banal - "hard working white people" as an example.

I am just saying that they haven't had a logical message since they started the campaign so to expect them to find it now is unrealistic. The fact that they are still sounding stupid is not an argument that they have decided to continue to sound stupid forever.

I think that there message has for some time been designed not for you, me or undecided voters but for her core supporters so tha they will continue to send in money. Once that horse dies they will give it up. Its a matter of days now.

You're right, but it works both ways.

Your statement could easily have been applied to her comments and actions before the RBC committee meeting. Some did make a similar argument: Hillary will abide by the ruling.

What is certain is that she can go either way tomorrow: concede or continue.

17. Yes we can always go crazy later but I just don't see the advantage of
speculating like this when in 48 hours we are going to know and while there are Clinton supporters are "putting up the white flag" as we speak er write. Its not like Clintons will actually read this lol.

19. It wasn't written for the Clintons to read.
I see absolutely no reason why Hillary's comments should be off limits for discussion. We will not know what her plans are until tomorrow, but she is making statements today. Why ignore what she's saying?

We can always wait for her to concede or not, but do you believe that whatever she says tomorrow will go without comment or discussion?

once Obama reaches 2118, it's hard to imagine Hillary remaining defiant.

off of her goalpost. That way it'll just push around in circles? Then she can win Smallville, USA forty times?

"Anyone that can win Smallburg, USA. not just once, or even twice, but winning it 3 times during the course of one Primary, is ready from day one to beat McCain in a lansdslide"

I can remember the days saying stupid shit like that used to be :sarcasm:. Anymore, I'm not so sure?
