Well, here's a revelation; "John McCain: Presidential Candidate, ABBA Fan."
From Sunday's Arizona Republic:

Sure, you may know where Sen. John McCain stands on such issues as health care and abortion. But on Friday morning, he took a bold stand on one of the most controversial issues of the day.

The man loves ABBA.

The intriguing - some might say disturbing - revelation occurred during the Johnjay and Rich show at 104.7 FM (KZZP). The presidential candidate called in at 6 a.m. as part of the duo's Who Do You Know contest, in which famous people phone in and stump for everyday folks to win a car.

"He said that a lot of people won't admit that they love ABBA, but he would," radio jock Rich Berra says. "Then he asked us if it was old-fashioned to like ABBA, and we said that it wasn't old-fashioned at all." . . . http://www.azcentral.com/ent/music/articles/2008/06/06/20080606mccainabba.html

Being of Swedish descent myself, I love many things Swedish, and am particularly grateful to Swedes recently:

Other things, maybe not so much:

But ABBA? That's so - 1970s, John. Now, if he had gone back to Jimi Hendrix, I might have been impressed. But I think he and his ideas are more from this era:

3. it was catchy in "Murial's Wedding" until about the 10th time it was played
the only way I can like that song is when it is used ironically.

Pretzelwarrior <------ not planning to see Mama Mia.

4. It sounds like Oliver's Army by Elvis Costello
By design. Hope you are an Elvis fan and can appreciate this.

I read a Clash interview where they said they were Abba fans. "The women are very nice", Mick said.

9. LOVE the Clash...
and heard they recorded a version of "Meet the Beatles" that I'd like to hear.

Never got into Costello. Tried "Watching the Detectives" and all that. He also was a racist shit. I hope he's outgrown that.

13. I love the strings
Friday Night and the lights are low *strings*
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music
Getting in the swing
You come to look for a king.
Anybody could be that guy *string*
The night is young and the music's high

15. I love ABBA
and I'm not ashamed to admit it. :)

However, even this newly forged bond, based on our mutual admiration of those perfect Swedish pop hooks, doesn't make me like him one bit more.

17. Quintessential pop band of the 70s. You know, like Hall & Oates.
Edited on Sun Jun-08-08 02:22 PM by faygokid
Actually, H&O came on the scene in the late 70s. They overlapped, though, with ABBA, who hit a bit earlier.

Is any of this registering?

I didn't think so. Don't worry, you didn't miss much.

23. McCrazy World
"Crazy World"

I was out for the morning sun
Couldn't sleep so I thought I'd take a walk
I was thinking of you and me
And I went to your house 'cos I had to talk
I could hardly believe my eyes
When I saw this guy closing your front door
Had a feeling of emptiness
Like I've never had before

And I close my eyes
Will you leave me, girl?
And I realise
It's a crazy world

As he disappeared in his car
I was stunned and I didn't know what to do
Everything I had ever been
Everything in my life's a part of you
And I just couldn't move my feet
So I stood on the pavement as you came out
You acted as you didn't know
What it was all about

And I close my eyes
Will you leave me, girl?
And I realise
It's a crazy world

Baby how could you do it
You just told me lies
Had you been behind my back with other guys?
Baby how could you tell me
There was only me
I was stupid to believe you
I was blind but now I see

Then you smiled and you took my hand
"There is something," you said "that you may not know.
There's a couple of men in my life,
And one of them is my brother Joe. :wow:
He's been gone for a long long time
But he's back and I think he's gonna stay.
You'll be seeing a lot of him
He's so nice in every way."

And I close my eyes
Never leave me, girl
And I realise
It's a crazy world
So I close my eyes
Never leave me, girl
Then I realise
It's a crazy world
