Dear John,
“Reform. Prosperity. Peace.” Those are the words you end your latest campaign ad with, and I must say that I am very glad to hear you say them. I am glad that you want so badly to talk about reform, peace, and prosperity that you are willing to spend vast sums of money to place them prominently in a television ad.
It just so happens that I want to talk about reform, peace, and prosperity as well. I would like to talk about the “reforms” that you made by voting with Bush 95% of the time, and I would like to talk about the “peace and prosperity” that has been brought about by those reforms.
You see Americans understand the reforms you and your friends put in place over the past several years, we understand your reforms a bit too well. We have seen the effects of your version of reform in America, and we have seen the effects of your reforms in Iraq.
We have seen the dead bodies lying in the streets of Baghdad, we have seen the soldiers trying to recover after having their limbs blown off, we have seen our treasury looted by Halliburton, we have watched our jobs disappear, we have watched our energy prices soar, we have watched people suffer without health care, and we have seen people tortured.
This is the type of reform that you and your friends have brought us.
But you are not done reforming you tell us. You want to stay in Iraq a hundred years, you want to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, you want to give the corporations even more control over our health care system, you want to “bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran”, and you want us all to believe your reforms are bringing about peace and prosperity.
I hate to break it to you John, but when we see yet another bomb exploding in Iraq we are not exactly thanking you for bringing about peace. When we see our bridges collapsing and our schools failing we are not thinking that your support for the Bush agenda has brought us prosperity.
But if you want to talk about peace, prosperity, and reform then please keep talking. I have a feeling Barack Obama would like to talk about those things as well, hell maybe you can even talk him into making those the topics of discussion at one of your upcoming debates. I am sure he would love to stand up with you and debate whose reforms would do more to bring about peace and prosperity, the man who supported the Bush agenda or the man who opposed it.
If you want to have a talk on reform, peace, and prosperity then please don't shy away from that talk. You need to demand that Obama agrees to focus one of the debates on reform, peace, and prosperity. Because you are confident enough to use those words in a television ad I am sure you will be confident in making that demand, and I am sure that Obama will be more than happy to discuss the “peace and prosperity” brought about by the “reforms” pushed by you and your friend George.
Sincerely,
A Citizen
(Note: If you want to see the ad for yourself it is currently the top item on McCain's home page, which is a site that I refuse to link to but should be easy enough to find.)
