Birth Certificate vs Certificate of Live Births - Freepers all atwitter!
Anyone else hear of the newest complaint about Obama's birth certificate. That it is called a Certificate of Live Birth and NOT a Birth Certificate.

I shit you not. This is what the freepers I deal with are yammering about. The little research I did seems to indicate that all US birth certificates are actually called Certificates of Live Birth.

Is this not correct?

1. You are correct: "birth certificate" is legally incorrect
These documents are properly called "certificates of live birth."

2. A reich-winger at my office was using this talking point today
Until I had my wife bring my birth certificate by the office and confronted my co-worker with it. It says "State of Tennessee Certificate of Live Birth".

I asked, so I guess that means I'm a muslim in disguise and hate America, using your logic. I received no response.

11. I hate being confrontational at work, but one can only take so much of the hate mail
She is huge into sending out the chain mails saying Obama is a Muslim (all with HUSSEIN capitalized of course) and other filth and dredge. I normally overlook it because of her stupidity, but I just couldn't let this one go by without a challenge. She knows I'm a big Obama supporter so her spreading those lies in front of me was her first mistake. I'm going to start sending out e-mails debunking her claims when she sends out the e-mails until we are both told to stop.

22. It's not a problem where I work
It's almost ingrained into the corporate structure, especially in election years. We are mid-size company and our e-mail directory probably has about 75-100 names on it for corporate office folks. All of us are on a first name basis, know each other very well and most of us know each others families.

I can see how it would be a problem in other environments, but ours is such that we can send out the chain mails and such. My general rule of thumb is not to send anything unless its 100% factually accurate and cited appropriately. I dont send that many out unless its something very important and I'll send it to the personal email rather than the work email.

47. Did you also request that she bring her birth certificate in too?
Of course she will probably have thought of doing that and bringing hers in tomorrow. But then when she checks it she will find hers is that way too.

Just a caveat. The original will most likely be entitled "Certificate of Live Birth". But the computer generated copy is not as likely. So if she brings in a computer generated copy be ready to challenge her.

Not the one I got when I requested a copy in 2003--that one looks like the one Obama gave to Kos--but the photocopy of the actual 1961 original. It says "CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH." It's the one my mother got in order to enroll me in kindergarten.

it is still the "official" name for what we informally call a birth certificate. Or so that's what I'm discovering from the US Census and other sites that all cite CERTIFICATES OF LIVE BIRTHS.

42. Indeed it does.
There is infomation on the photocopy of my original birth certificate that is not on the modern version I received in 2003. Such as, how many babies had my mother given live birth to prior to me, and how many babies had she had that were "born dead" prior to me (0, in her case). Health departments keep track of this, or at least they used to.

There's also the sexist aspect of having a space on which to list the father's occupation at the time, but no similar space for the mother's occupation--the assumption at the time being that she simply would not have one.

20. Funny....
Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 08:56 PM by jackster
One of the major freepers I spar with and the one who brought this point up, once argued with me for days over an article I posted. The article, with its date clearly visible, was about an issue that had been brewing for a couple of years. I can't even remember now what it was. But the day AFTER the article appeared on line (again with the date prominently displayed) when I posted the article and commented upon it, the freeper argued incessantly that the article was not current and was several years old. I didn't have much history with him at that point and patiently tried to point out that yes, the story itself might be old, but the article updating the story was only one day old. He couldn't get it.

And this guy claims to be a real estate agent. Oh, a semi-retired real estate agent. A CATHOLIC freeper who doesn't get the irony that he assails Obama for attending a "racist" church while he is lives and breathes the Catholic Church. When I pointed out to him that he might be a hypocrite and that by his logic he should be called a pedophile, he posted a discussion entitled "Jackster says all Catholics are Pedophiles." Never married, no children. Spends HOURS online searching every right wing wacko site he can find for the strangest bits of news and doesn't know the difference between fact and opinion.

Have I just described the perfect Freeper?

23. I don't understand the obsession with his birth certificate
Is the suspicion that he was born in Africa and somehow secreted into Hawaii?
From reading Obama's book I do think he has some confusion over whether his parents were actually married, and perhaps that is why he is guarded about personal documents. But what difference would that make? It's obvious that he couldn't have been born anywhere other than in Hawaii.
It just doesn't make sense to me, other than a random invasion of privacy over something that doesn't make a difference.

56. Actually.....
....that is an arguement they're using, that he may have actually been born in Kenya instead of Hawaii.

Or that his parents weren't married, (like that has ANYTHING to do with his mom being a citizen.

The most convoluted ones are that his mother was 18 when he was born, and since she wasn't a legal adult at the time and his father wasn't a citizen, that somehow that makes him not a natural citizen. (A varient is that Hawaiian state law stated that the citizen parent had to live in the US for ten years, five of those years after the age of 16. Since she was 18, that means she didn't qualify for that and therefore he is not a "legit" US citizen.

And the other is that President Clinton acknowledged that the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii was illegal. Therefore the annexation of Hawaii, (and eventual statehood) was illegal and Hawaii is not a real state.

There's also a couple insisting that US law mandates that the child take the last name of the citizen parent, therefor his name should be Barry Soltero, and that since his name is Barack Obama, it's proof he wasn't born in the US. (WHAT????)

Larry Johnson's mental breakdown / train wreck of a blog has some echo chamber masturbation about this around the 15th of this month. Bring hip boots

66. Well, Freepers are not known for their sterling language skills,
as the DU hate mailbag proves.

68. Good. Keep them distracted. When they get bored with that...
throw them a ball of tinfoil.

72. They now have faked up a certificate to show the birth of a dog and are claiming
that the Kos pdf is a Photoshopped fake.

I do not get it. As long as he is a "natural born citizen" everything is OK. Why all of the fuss for nothing?

69. My birth certificate simply says
"Certificate of Vital Records." No where on it does it say either "birth certificate" or "certificate of live birth." It's an original with the state seal on it. Since it doesn't say "certificate of live birth" does that mean I was born dead, or not born at all?

Apparently, it's good enough for the U.S. Government work because I got a U.S. Passport with my "Certificate of Vital Records."

73. "Certification of Birth" issued by New York City. I do think
the old certificate I had (which burned up in our house fire last summer) was a Certificate
of Birth.
