no more cookiegate please?
i need cookiegate to go away
i don't want to have to worry about the ethics of cooking
i do it for a living
since 1977
i have stolen recipes every time i came across a tasty tidbit
when you start with this cookiegate you indict every cook since Og dragged a mastodon leg home and dropped it on the fire
we all steal recipes
our very livelihood in some cases depend on the vast resources of theft

1. Oh please....
the pukes got to have bittergate, pastorgate, proud of my countrygate. All we have is cookie-gate since that flaming meatsack John McCain seems to be untouchable by the wimpy msm. I for one am bitterly clinging to cookie-gate

23. I might be willing to leave it alone IF you can help me with my
mashed potato problem. For some reason, I cannot make decent mashed potatos to save my freaking life! You have 24 hours to deliver on my demands before I start stalking you with cookie-gate related posts! :hi:

25. describe the problem?
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 01:35 AM by swampg8r
and i can do it
edited to take a shot

first get a good masher pay what it costs and dont buy a piece of crap
you will be exerting force on it it needs to be strong get one with holes that are about 1/4 inch or so

most potato mistakes are in the belief that potatoes are tasty
untrue
potatoes are bland
they come alive with butter cream or milk salt and pepper

always boil the potato until completely tender
wash them well and leave the skins ON the skins unlike the meat have flavor

drain them completely water left in during the mash will make them mealy

salt is your friend and so is pepper
so is butter not margarine
also blue cheeses add a lot of subtle flavor
crumbled bacon works well
do each addition and taste
butter til its right
pepper til its right
salt til its right
cream or milk to adjust the texture

bon appetit

34. Thank you...
if this works, I publicly vow that I shall never again mention cookie-gate. One more question, what is a potato ricer and would that be the best implement of mashing?

35. a ricer will mash but no
its not best choice
if you use a ricer you cooke the potatos less and then when you squish them through
the result resembles overcooked rice

Nothing better than lard for a flaky crust. But butter's better than that scary crisco crap.

7. Steal with pride. That's what we teachers do.
When something works, use it.

But I will say, I'd never claim someone else's lesson as my own invention. If I modified and improved it, sure. But if it was wholly someone else's idea it wouldn't be right to take credit.

On the other hand, there are some ideas that are too simple or widespread to claim. Spaghetti sauce, for instance. Chicken stock. Brownies. Vanilla icecream.

Butterscotch cookies? Probably.

9. but the reality is
if i went into my wifes recipes and dragged out her chocolate chip recipe its the one on the nestles package

anything that has been used as a sales tool
like a cookie recipe
can become part of a repretoire
if my wife makes an awesome batch of toll house cookies she gets the credit for nestles recipe
but she will swear its her recipe

12. I can see that. But she wouldn't enter it into an original recipe contest as her own, would she?
Of course, that's not what Cindy McCain did, either. They didn't ask for an original recipe, and saying it came from "a friend" covers her ass nicely. It could be true, and that's enough.

Definitely not worth arguing about. I'd rather have a slice of your apple pie, regardless of the recipe's provenance. Or some meatloaf. Mastodon, not so much, unless you fix it like barbecued brisket.
