'Florida's pristine coastline should not become just another chit in presidential politics.'
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 11:51 AM by seafan
Charlie Crist has finally exposed his naked political pandering for McCain's VP slot as he cruelly feeds Florida to the GOP wolves who are ripping down our country.

Florida House Democratic Leader Dan Gelber, in his letter to Governor Charlie Crist:

Governor Crist,

You and I have worked together on many, many issues. While we don't always agree, I have always respected you for your willingness to engage an honest debate and avoid the rank partisanship that has defined our state for too long.

So it is in that spirit that I urge you to reconsider your support of Senator McCain and President Bush's position to lift the moratorium on drilling off the shores of Florida. Although I am confident that we will disagree on who to support for President, we both should be able to agree that Florida's pristine coastline should not become just another chit in presidential politics.

What is most distressing has been the argument that we should lift the ban because of the high cost of gasoline. It is simply not fair or accurate to suggest that allowing oil drilling off the Florida coast will do anything to alleviate the currently oppressive cost of fuel. In fact, the Bush administration issued a report saying exactly that just last year, and John McCain himself admitted as recently as three weeks ago that this would not help consumers at the pump.

I think your initial instincts on this were right and I urge you to retreat to your original position that protects our pristine coastlines.

You and I agree that we should not gamble with our state's economic future. So let's protect our coastlines by maintaining the moratorium on drilling off Florida's beaches.

Your friend,
Dan Gelber

Sink, Gelber keep up the heat on Crist's oil-drilling pivot

By Aaron Deslatte
June 20, 2008

With the national Democratic machinery in full-throated attack, Florida Democrats were also doing their best to keep hammering away a Gov. Charlie Crist's decision to back Republican presidential hopeful John McCain's offshore drilling plans.

Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink appeared on CNBC this morning to blast the idea that eastern Gulf oil rigs could lower prices at the pump, and didnt shirk when the show's hosts asked her if Crist then wasn't acting in te (sic) best interests of Floridians.

"I'm another elected official, and this is bad for Florida," she said. "It is interesting that over a 48 hour period, George Bush, John McCain and Charie Crist alchanged their minds about this," she added in the interview.

Fla. CFO angry over Crist's switch on oil drilling

June 18, 2008

TALLAHASSEE - Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink is angry that Gov. Charlie Crist no longer supports a federal moratorium on oil drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Sink quickly called a press conference after returning to the Capitol on Wednesday because she wanted to let people know that Crist's new position is not supported by others in Florida.

Crist has campaigned against drilling off Florida's coast but now backs the position of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who says the federal ban should be lifted so states can decide whether they want drilling.

1. I would think the Florida tourism groups would be screaming
in Crist's ears.
They lose those beaches and emerald waters, Florida economy will nose dive.

3. Wow, that CNBC guy was a Cheney-head
Alex Sink handled them decently. I wish more people would make that point that this will only bring oil on line 10 years from now and make only a couple of cents difference at the pump.

5. The only reason why the ban was there.....
Was because Jebbie-pooh was governor. If a non-Bush or a Democrat had been governor, the drilling would have started years ago.

7. Both former Democratic Governors opposed it.

Bob Graham always opposed drilling off of Florida's coast. Lawton Chiles supported a 100 mile limit on drilling off Florida.
