Wouldn't Hagel be the ideal choice for McCain?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080620/ap_on_el_pr/obama_hagel

I think that the GOP needs an image overhaul, STAT. Ron Paul and Chuck Hagel are the only people that can do it, imho. Poor McCain is destine to lose in 2008, imho.

Rogue Republicans are a lot more self preserving than rogue Democrats. That's why you see Lieberman acting as a surrogate for McCain. I doubt Hagel will actively support Obama, but any failure to endorse McCain and his distance from McCain will be the indication.

7. nope. they've had a bitter falling out.
Hagel, McCain and Kerry used to be friends and were political allies on many issues. Kerry and McCain had their falling out in the '04 general election campaign(and to think that McCain and Kerry reportedly talked about McCain joining the ticket!). The McCain and Hagel rift is unbridgeable from what I hear. Hagel has become more and more outspoken about Iraq. He also has been providing rear guard cover for Obama on foreign policy issues. That must drive McCain nuts!. Hagel is an old school conservative, Ike style Republican. He can't stand what's happened to his party.

12. McCain might have chosen him as VP in 2000, had he
won the primary--Hagel was McCain's national campaign co-chair. He was also on Bush's short list for VP in 2000, as well--was vetted by Cheney. He's pretty much burned the bridges since then. He said in an interview that McCain was "smarter" than some of the foreign policy stuff he's been espousing--Ouch! I don't think there's a bigger insult, really, than to suggest that his old friend is now totally full of shit (although it's true).
