2. Hagel may be against the war now, but he has
a very conservative world view. His voting record speaks for itself and makes clear that he doesn't belong on a democratic ticket. He votes the republican party line.

21. Hagel is a good guy, although his views on domestic issues is not very progressive.

5. If Hagel was chosen, I'd worry about Obama's safety
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 04:28 PM by Onlooker
I could certainly see a crazy rightie, so full of rage, thinking that Hagel is the next in the line of command. That way, we'd end up with an anti-war, anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-immigrant, anti-environment, anti-tax president, who would surely keep our vicious Supreme Court in the hands of hate.

Hagel should be nowhere in an Obama administration, certainly nowhere in the line of succession.

6. hell to the no! And I very much doubt that there is a chance in hell of that happening.
But that doesn't mean I don't want to see his attempts at an audition. Come on, Hagel. Get cracking on the Wall Street Journal op eds blasting McCain, ala Joe Lieberman.

20. He actually coauthored two recent opeds
one with Kerry on foreign policy issues (Syria primarily) and one with Feingold on intelligence issues. You must at least agree that the guy keepd good company :-).

8. saw that too
WTF was up with the Chicago Tribune's Jill Zuckerman being all "This makes me feel very sad that the friendship between Hagel and McCain has gotten to this place. It makes me feel bad." or whatever?

10. Ouch. That's gotta sting for McBush
Obama won't choose Hagel so I'm not worried about it, but this is a pretty big slap for McBush...which is always fun to watch.

13. I think that Hagel is a good, honest, principled man.
I agree with his stance on the war and I love that he stood up to President Bush and was vocal about Bush's mistakes.

But, Hagel is not progressive. His views on everything OTHER than Iraq are conservative including women's issues and right to life.

17. I have a problem with that philosophy.
He is not a neo-con. He is like my in-laws. Nice, conservative, honest, hardworking. They had different views on many issues but they were principled.

You seem to be confusing neo-cons with republican.

This country has a huge split & if not corrected will lead to violence. No Question. He is a good man. Sorry, GDPers. There are some very good Republicans.

14. Our own little Lieberman
They're like mirror images: Lieberman is left-of-center on most issues, but a total sniveling shit head on the war. Hagel is a fanatical right wing culture warrior, but has become a sane voice on foreign policy.

What do they have in common? Neither should be anywhere near the vice-presidency.

23. In a way, yes, they are mirror images
except that Hagel is not fanatical about anything, he is rational and thoughtful (which does not make him right, but does make him a voice worth listening to). Also, his "sanity" on foreign policy is not a recent conversion.

27. People are getting too pushed out of shape about
all the VP rumors for both the Republican and Democratic tickets. So Hagel and Nunn might be on a list. It doesn't mean they will get chosen. It's only the end of June and likely he won't chose a VP for at least another month. There's no point getting all worked up over it.

28. Agree,
and Hagel's comment is good propaganda.

Don't expect either he or Nunn will be the VeeP.

I see a lot of paranoia here...relax! There's not a boogieman around every corner...just every other corner.

Obama IS going to win in a landslide.

29. Maybe Hagel can be a good token bipartisan cabinet pick
and usually I'd rather have a Dem appointed for SecDef or SecState, but Hagel is actually worth considering for these posts....
