He has more to gain and more to lose with his selection.
Let's look at it.
McCain's already losing his edge as a reformer and moderate. Many people are buying the Obama line McCain is Bush's third term. So if McCain decides to go with a moderate Republican, or former Democrat, it will either help him or destroy his chances.
It could help him with some Democrats, but how many Republicans would be turned off if McCain, who many Republicans believe is pro-choice, selected a pro-choice Jew from the northeast? I'm guessing it would upset more Republicans than it would inspire Democrats to cross over and vote for him in the General.
Now there is the opposite of this, McCain might feel the need to shore up his conservative base, so he picks someone like Huckabee. Will it be enough to get the conservatives out to vote for him? Maybe, but it also could turn off the swing voters and if that happens, the Republicans lose. If McCain were to pick a militant anti-choice candidate like Bobby Jindal, not only would he kill any chance of getting the pro-choice womens' vote, he'd probably turn off a lot of moderates.
Of course, then you have the age factor. Does McCain want someone younger than him? Possibly, but if the guy is too young, it could make him look too old. Nothing is worse for the top of the ticket than having a VP look better, healthier and younger than you. And if it's someone like Bobby Jindal, then the experience of your vice president comes into play. And what's Jindal's experience? He was a congressman for a few years and has been governor for only a few months. Kind of hard to trash Obama about experience when the man who very well could replace you is younger and less experienced.
Then that leaves someone equally as old as McCain. If he were to select an older candidate, like Joe Lieberman, you've got the Grumpy Old Men ticket. How will that play, especially if Obama picks a younger senator or governor?
That leaves a person that isn't too old or too young. Someone who isn't too radical, yet not too liberal.
For Obama, he could probably choose Webb, Biden, Sebelius or Richardson and none would have a negative impact on his ticket. McCain isn't as lucky.
