I was part of a successful grassroots event in the small town of Lake Mills, WI last Thursday. Madison is about 30 miles away.
This town is like so many other towns where jobs have left and families struggle with gas prices, inflation and have kids serving overseas in Bush's wars. Many of the people are salt of the Earth, non-nonsense folks who are really looking for change from the last 8 years.
That's why over 200 people showed up for this event, which is a great turnout for a town this size.
I brought my PA system and Obama sign I use at the Farmers Market in Madison. The itinerary was rally tunes, a local trio that played Cash, Dylan, Willie Nelson, Elvis and other tunes followed by some local Democrats running for office and ending with a DVD projection of the 2004 Obama speech at the Democratic Convention.
It all went well.
Some Obama staffers did pitch in and get many people signed up and sold Obama merchandise as well.
There were also some peace groups there as well as some former troops from the Iraq War who support Obama.
There was also a LOT of food and refreshments... for $10, you could get a heaping platter of brats, beans, salad, corn, bread, some homemade deserts and a refreshment. All that money went to the local Democratic party.
After the speeches were made, it was getting dark enough to put up a tarp and fire up the laptop and video projector and boom Obama's speech out of the PA. Obamas speech from the Democratic Convention still is very relevant to what is the message of the campaign. I still tear up at parts of the speech.
Here is a photo of some Obama staffers and friends with the very popular Obama cutout.
