John McCain needs his rest (9 hrs a nite) or he's not "sharp".
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/09/rest-relaxation-and-veeps/

LAS VEGAS—Senator John McCain often starts his campaign days at the civilized hour of 9 a.m., and now we know why: He needs his rest.
“If I can sleep in until about 7:30 or 8, then it really helps me,’’ Mr. McCain told a small group of reporters on his campaign plane on Friday night, enroute to Las Vegas. “I think when I get up real early, like 5:30 or 6, and don’t go to bed until 10, 10:30 or 11, it seems to help me to get up a little later in the morning.’’

8. Tell me about it.
If I get 5 hours of sleep or less more than 3 nights in a row (and really, what parent hasn't had that happen) I'm not sharp either.

But I'm not running for President.

When he hits the pilly is unknown.

5. I didn't know McCain was "sharp" at all!
He is no more "sharp" than some of those old farts at Grandpa Simpson's nursing home.

10. Interesting. Every elderly person I know is up at about 4am.
Especially on Saturdays. Don't try telling my grandmother to sleep in on yard sale day!!

Next thing he'll tell us about is his pre-lunch power nap and his daily afternoon siesta.

13. Evidently.
Strange thing, as noted in a post above, is that the older folks in my life tend to sleep less as the years go by.

I swear my 85 year old grandma doesn't sleep more than 5 hours a night, even though she's retired and certainly could.

15. That's normal for the elderly but I think he's getting exhausted
by his campaign and needs a lot more rest than usual.

He really is much too old for the job.

24. I haven't slept 9 hours let alone 8 hours since I was a teenager
I noticed on Obama's trip he didn't sleep much either and probably is fine
with 6 hours.

25. He makes older people look bad.
My 95 year old great-grandmother sleeps less than him and is much more coherent. If he can’t function with weekends off and sleeping 9 hrs a night, how can he govern the country?

and second, isn't this just one more way in which he is exactly like George Bush. They really are two of a kind.

I haven't been to bed that early in years, except when I am rather deathly ill.

I wish I could make his money for the hours he puts in. Except I don't want to have to go to Arizona. Its hot there all too often.
