The part about Chimpy being a "good debater" is a clear shot at the lowered expectations that the Chimp has benefited from in past debates.

7. Agree that Kerry was smart to say that Bush is a good debater
It's not that Bush can discuss issues but he does not how to connect with the uninformed and unfortunately the majority of the electorate has been uninformed in the past.

I think it will be hard for Kerry to debate Bush for the same reason that it was hard for Gore to debate him.

Kerry is serious and thoughtful and complex whereas Bush looks like the guy next door.

That said, I hope with all my heart that Kerry wins this election.

Seriously, you've been missing the only "news" commentary that's consistently worth watching over the last 5 years. It's not just the jokes. Jon Stewart has earned the ire of mainstream news anchors for not selling out to kiss bush ass. While other hosts are throwing softballs to the likes of Richard Pearl, Jon will ask the simple tough questions that get to the heart of the issues, all the while keeping it funny. Jon does some of the best interviews, including those of other media whor -- err, hosts. His recent interview with Wolf "u-boat commander" Blitzer is particularly memorable.

Would you REALLY want someone to walk up to you, with your business in your hand, to introduce themselves to you and want to shake your hand? This is eerily similar to the reason that Stephen King gave up signing autographs for the exact same reason.

40. Yeah.
Nice rapport with Jon, though. Makes Kerry seem accessible. I like the way he hemmed and hawed, then talked about people approaching him in the men's room -- I don't think he was really thinking about it, but that will actually work with The Daily Show's demographic. Humanizes him, and kind of tacitly says, 'I'm available, I don't have goons to keep people away from me 24/7.

I think ultimately, tired or not, it will prove to have been a good thing. It's a sure-fire way to reach that audience -- and any undecideds who may rest within it.

Kerry said that Bush beat Gore in the debates. I disagree completely. Bush did not beat Gore in the debates, Gore focused more on his looks than the actual debate and it thru him off. BUSH DID NOT BEAT GORE IN THE DEBATES!

41. Kerry's just trying to raise Bush's expectations
In ever debate, George Bush is "underestimated" by everyone, so he gets to claim victory. If most people think he can't string two words together and he does, than he becomes the winner. Gore won the debates, but because people expected him to slaughter Bush, it didn't seem like a victory. Kerry is trying to prevent that from happening.

42. I remember only a few things from those debates and they were all points
for Bush:

- Bush said that global warning was only a theory and a lot of people don't believe it's true. Did Gore even try to refute that?

- When Gore crowded Bush on the stage and Bush made a funny face that made Gore look like a fool.

- That orange makeup on Gore. I can't believe he did that. There must be a story behind that.

I don't remember Gore scoring ANY points in those debates.

The VP debates were worse. Lieberman laughed at Cheney's joke about never having made money off his connections to the federal government. I almost thought Joe was thinking about voting for Cheney 'cause Cheney was such a funny guy.

44. Kerry is intentionally setting up high expectations for Bush.
Very smart! He deliberately said Bush was a good debater so nobody falls into the trap of assuming Shrub will step on his d*ck. The reason Gore was perceived by many in the media to have "lost" the debates is that everyone assumed Gore would clean his clock, so the expectations for Shrub were ever low. When his fly wasn't open and he managed not to make a complete ass of himself, he did so much better than they expected that they were able to pick on Gore's weaknesses and conclude Shrub won. Kerry won't let that happen. He wants the media to expect Bush to be freaking brilliant (ha!) so that when he isn't, he will be seen to have lost.

54. My take: An okay performance by Kerry. Stewart pretty much
lobbed softballs to Kerry. Kerry did fine, appeared relaxed and at ease. He is not the natural media megastar that Clinton or John F. Kennedy are, but then again, virtually no one is.

What might be good for appearances like this in the future is for Kerry to have a little joke or story especially prepared.

76. Don't know, but have you heard about fthevote.com?
They're trying to get people who will fuck Republicans if they guarantee not to vote in the 2004 election--exchanging sex for lowering Bush's vote.

Performing that duty would NOT be wrong, but my problem with the whole thing is how in samhill could you ever, ever, ever trust a Republican to be honorable and keep his word.

Not a plan. Not even a good idea. I bet the person who thought it up is a republican trying to get laid.

68. Shit, Will. I looked, but didn't see this thread, so I started one
about the "Bush is a great debater" thing.

I agree that it was a good move on Kerry's part. I'll go alert my post now, as it's a dupe.

70. He was good
He did seem to have a cold, but he appeared relaxed. I just wish he would have been a little more emphatic about the Swift Boat liar issue - but he probably knew that if he had, his comments would have made another news cycle about it. Maybe it was better to blow it off, but damn, it's such an ugly smear job.

78. and those who watch the daily show
already know the truth.

it might also be good to address it on a comedy show rather than things considered to be more serious news shows because it might make the swiftboat liars look more like the jokes they are rather than something that deserves too serious acknowledgement.
