Slate did not like Kerry on the Daily Show
http://slate.msn.com/id/2105618/

(snip)

Kerry's charisma was less than zero: It was negative. He was a charm vacuum, forced to actually borrow mojo from audience members. He was a dessicated husk, a tin man who really didn't have a heart. His lack of vibrancy, his utter dearth of sex appeal made Al Gore look like Charo.

(snip)

Kerry seemed unclear on the concept that he was there precisely to poke fun at the recirculated sound bites of the talking-head circuit, that this was his chance to take terms like "liberal" and "flip-flop" and split them wide open. All he had to do was shoulder his rocket launcher (he's good at that, right?) and take aim at the received wisdom that has kept the focus of this campaign exactly where the Bush camp wants it to be: on who did what in a war we lost 30 years ago, rather than what to do next in the war we're losing right now. Instead, Kerry ignored every opening Stewart gave him, preferring to dust off rhetoric that's become familiar even to casual followers of his campaign: "You don't go to war because you want to. You go to war because you have to." That was a good line at the convention, but baby, the convention was a month ago! This is Jon Stewart, the king of politically savvy late-night television. You need new A-list material. Get someone on it.

2. What does Kerry think he's doing, running for President?
It is the moral obligation of politicians to entertain jaded, bored, self-absorbed journalists.

6. No, you've got it wrong
Politicians, especially presidents, should be the one you would most like to have a beer with down at the corner bar.

3. TFB - I thought it was great. Repeat tonight at 7:00 EST
I would watch it again if I didn't have a meeting with a bunch of RW's that I know.
I should blow it off, but then that would make me look like them.

7. Many people who were watching this show probably
hadn't seen much of Kerry before. It's good for him to get out his message. And he was energetic enough considering he's been campaigning non-stop since the convention. It was good for him to not seriously adress the bullshit flip-flop thing as I think he said about that that the American people would rather have an intelligent debate.

12. Exactly, I'm tired of having a government ran like Entertainment Tonight
episodes. This is the greatest country in the world, we should have a great leader who isn't a puppet. I'm not interested in how likable Kerry is, I'm interested in the fact he can moves this country in the right direction instead of down the shitter. Democracy can and will work if we get Bush out of office because he just wants to end democracy and run a dictatorship. He said so himself!

18. He was presidential.
I don't *WANT* a giggling, joking jackass as president. I want a respectable, dignified, honorable candidate.

He communicated with Stewart, joked a bit, laughed, got some great sound bites in*, and walked away without any gaffes. What the heck was he supposed to do, come in and start telling jokes and playing guitar -- and make a total ass out of himself, acting like a needy jerkoff?!?

Sorry, Slate, but I think voters are ready for a *serious* candidate. We've had enough of the "charming" village idiot.

----

* I especially liked his backing up John Edwards, saying Edwards was going to "win big in November." And his sound bite of "inventing our way out" of our energy dependence is just magnificent; I only wish he'd underscore that we won't likely wean ourselves off the oil teet with faux-Texas oilmen running the country.

22. Stick to movie reviews Dana! Perhaps Ms. Stevens was looking for
theatrics?

Afterall she is used to reviewing movies like ... Troy.

http://www.gothamist.com/interview/archives/2004/06/25/liz_penn_writertv_critic.php

Anyone who would mention Al Gore's sex appeal (in such an article) while she compares him to her fantasy about a highschool principal, :eyes: doesn't deserve to be taken seriously folks ...

Grow up Dana, Kerry's job was not to "turn you on"

23. Senator Kerry was great on the TDS
I was very impressed with how well he did on the show. It was one of the best Daily Shows ever. Senator Kerry handled himself well and showed that he had a sense of humor. Compared to the horrible performance by Bush on MTP back in January, this was a home run.

25. It's clear Surfergirl won't be giving Kerry an Oval Office hummer,
but IMHO she's being pretty hard on the old Senator simply for appearing stiff on cable tv. John Kerry IS stiff, reserved, cautious. Just what you'd respect from an honest polititian who's survived Massachusetts politics for 30 years. What does Surfergirl expect? Colin Farrell?

I very much enjoyed watching John with Jon. Surfergirl makes a few valid critiques about Kerry's performance, but are we really hiring a president because of his sex appeal? Should that even be part of the mix? Do I even want to know that Surfergirl would do Al Gore?

It's just bullsh*t. Trees. Trivia to steal your attention. Sharks.

Move along sir. Nothing to see here.

Another reason not to read Slate anymore.

he and that grinning doofazoid Craig Crawford were almost entirely negative about the appearance, particularly regarding the flipfloppostion ads Kerry served up with his answer to Stewart's question

too bad Steward didnt' go after Gillespie even THAT hard tonight
