Obama will be announcing his VP pick today. Who will it be? My guess.
Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 09:03 AM by Mugsy
Since it is certain Senator Obama is not waiting until the Convention Monday to announce his VP choice, he will have to announce his pick today.

Since Hillary is already scheduled to talk on Wednesday, we know it won't be her because you don't have your VP speaking on more nights than you do.

The other day, Senator Obama stated that his VP pick (paraphrase) "will know where he comes from and remember his roots". The use of "he" and "his" seems to rule out Hillary, but I'd like to suggest that if a person's "roots" is being cited, I'd like to argue this makes a strong case that Senator Obama will surprise many by picking Governor Bill Richardson as his VP pick.

If so, this would be a fantastic choice IMHO. With foreign policy cred as former Ambassador to the UN, Energy policy cred as Former Energy Secretary AND as one of the greenist governors in the country, whose recent negotiations with North Korea not only led to their disarmament by the release of the remains of several MIA's from the NK war (Richardson is big among the MIA/POW crowd), whose state is one of the few with a balanced budget, doesn't cost us a crucial Senator in the quest for a 60+ super-majority, and draws enough of the Hispanic vote that it would make up for any votes lost from Hillary traitors that would vote for McCain, without regard for the consequences, out of spite.

Racist scumbags that wouldn't vote for a "double minority" ticket were already weeded out when a black man won the nomination. And, though I'd hate to discuss it, any racist scumbags that might wish to do Obama harm if he wins might be less likely to if it meant putting a "Mex'cun" in the White House. Call it "the Cheney-effect".

But that's just my guess. What's yours?

2. Biden more likely as SecState.
I see Biden more likely as "Secretary of State".

This is not a fight he can be in.

5. He was also awful in the debates

I don't doubt his talents in other areas, but I don't think he is very good on the stump from what I've seen.

28. Not an issue

Thinking back to past VP's in debates:

Dan Quayle sucked big time in the debates, but that didn't stop Bush-41 from winning in '88.

I don't think the VP's performance is as big a deal-breaker as you might think.

29. That's very true
Although I don't think Bush 41 primed the media and the public for his choice quite the way Obama has. It didn't seem quite as important. Nor was the media quite the same as it is today. We kind of had a 24 hour news cycle then but not to the extent we do today.

On the other hand, you could just as easily argue that given the public's short attention span and the short shelf-life of most political news, we will have certainly moved on by November and other things will be more salient.

7. Interesting
Do you think Clark's (feux) "gaffe" on McCain's "qualified to be President" wouldn't come back to distract from the campaign?

15. Clark spoke the truth. If the pukes try to make it an issue, turn the tables
on them and force them to explain how getting shot down automatically qualifies one to be president.

9. I'm really rooting for Clark even though I know Biden's probably the favorite.
But I can't help but feel like maybe the MSM is just making this crap up. So I really hope that Obama did seriously consider Clark and picked him.

20. I'm *hoping* it'll be Clark.
He's always been my first choice, and I hope Obama chooses someone that takes the media by surprise. They've pretty much decided it's going to be Biden (at least many of them have) and I'd like to see them with egg on their faces.

6. There are several good choices for VP, Biden, Clark, Hillery.
I just hope that Obama does not screw up like Gore when he chose Lieberman. We will know when the November election is over and not before.

the people the media have picked. Maybe Obama is thinking out of the box as is his usual way.

11. Out ofthe box.
I haven't heard Richardson's name mentioned as a likely choice in many months.

I think Richardson would be that "surprise out-of-the-box" pick the media didn't see coming.

14. "Since it is certain Obama won't be waiting until...Monday..." is where you're wrong.
I think Obama HAS the news cycles as long as he can keep everyone guessing. The story becomes "Who will it be" and the media coverage is free. I can tell you that free media is the prize for political campaigns. Free media is where it's at.

If he keeps us waiting all weekend, he dominates the news cycles, and gets his name out there for people who are less politically inclined. It's brilliant. And he's doing the right thing.

19. He's not going to miss the Sunday shows
Obama isn't about to wait until AFTER the Sunday shows to hear the reaction, rather than find out during the Cnvention just how his choice will we be received.

24. My mother just received a racist email on the pick.
My mother, who is very religious, has discovered that a great number of her religious friends are extremely racist, a fact that become clearer & clear as this campaign has marched on.

She just forwarded me the following email:

My brother called me today to tell me that Obama had named his Vice-Pres running mate.
He picked Sylvester Stallone.
They will be running as "Sambo and Rambo".

26. I'm thinking Clinton or Biden -- if he MUST go with a senator who voted for the IWR.
I wish he'd think outside the box and NOT have a senator, but if he's going that route, I predict one of them.

31. I love your pick! Richardson is my favorite
I haven't much heard much about him lately. Richardson is my first choice, and Biden is my second. Whoever Obama picks is fine with me. If he picks Hillary, I am instantly her biggest fan. If she helps him the most, then pick her, Obama. I trust his judgment-he will pick the best person to be his VP.

I just want to keep McBush out of the WH. No more Bush agenda, please!
