but it seems like the email and cell phone thing was strictly marketing at this point - not advance info.

At this point, the Obama campaign is just annoying people with this. They're not creating excitement or buzz. It's gone long past that.

Short of Jesus Christ Himself being named as VP, I don't think anyone is going to live up to this built-up anticipation. And I like Joe Biden a lot and I think he'd be a fine Veep, but he's not worth this wait.

32. Just Because He Hasn't Personally Told You....
look, get a grip, it is who it is and I want to know as much as anyone...but everyone, including me has been waiting all day for something to happen and we have no clue as to what the candidate was thinking about when he wanted to tell the world. He may have never planned on telling before tomorrow. But I know that John Roberts on CNN this morning had my mother so certain that the announcement was coming any moment that she turned on every TV in the house in case she missed it. This circus is the being produced by the press. Don't get mad at Obama. Be patient. I'm not good at it either but we have no choice.

40. Someone leaked to the media that the announcement would come
sometime Friday--even if the Obama camp didn't agree with it and wasn't responsible for it, they should have planned to announce today, because apparently a lot of people and the media believed it and will certainly get annoyed if it seems like a lie to string us along. The nominee is chosen, there's simply no reason to keep it out of the public now.

48. Plus the e-mails.
He's used the hype to put together a particularly large collection of TM and e-mail addresses.

He had my e-mail address months ago. Tried unsubscribing every week or so for two months. Hotel California time. The hook was swallowed, bait and all, and is set. Can't get free.

So now I get e-mails hyping the VP announcement. So apparently I'm to be waiting with baited breath.

He needs to hurry the fuck up. Whether the hype has been created by the media or not, they need to take into account the public's perceptions. If he keeps this up for another day and it's just Biden like everyone thinks, that'll piss off ALOT of people. The only think justifying going past tonight is some huge surprise.

If he waits this long and unveils a flop like Chet or Bayh...he's hurt himself tremendously.

I am getting great enjoyment out of watching the newsies get their panties in a bunch, though. Like staking out Midway Airport, just watching Obama's airplane sit there. It's hilarious. Frankly, I don't care at all whether or when I get a text message on my cell phone. Whatever happens, happens; and in the meantime Obama is getting nonstop free news coverage from this. I think it's brilliant.

When I heard about Obama's planned event at Springfield I decided that would be the time he would make the announcement and the text might come right before that. I love this. Its fun, anticipating and guessing. I am soo looking forward to the convention now and before I was enjoying the olympics and not much into politics lately. Now, I'm ready. And I love watching the media squirm around and try to figure it out.

56. Yes. The prolonged tease is starting to seem adolescent. And considering how
Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 07:54 PM by highplainsdem
underwhelming any choice but Clinton or Gore would be at this point, it could backfire.

I mean, I like Biden, and if the party wasn't divided, he'd be a great pick.

But he didn't, like Clinton, get 18 million votes in the primaries.

And he didn't, like Gore, win the popular vote in 2000.

Picking Biden simply is not going to generate the kind of excitement this kind of buildup should lead up to.

And, to be honest, it hasn't been very nice to all the VP contenders to leave them hanging this long. And that's especially true if Clinton isn't the running mate. This was a contemptible way to treat her.

I have been wondering if possibly the Obama campaign has dragged this out and waited because the choice isn't Clinton (if so it's most likely Biden) and they know this is NOT going to go over well with Clinton's supporters, and they don't want to give them any more time to organize before the convention. (But the ones they have to worry about aren't the few demonstrators, but the huge numbers showing up in that NBC/WSJ poll as not behind Obama.)

And, possibly, they know choosing Biden won't give them a bump in the polls, which is going to be rather embarrassing, so they hope there will be at least some bump from the convention to cover the fact that Biden won't help the ticket the way Clinton could.

But if the running mate isn't Clinton, I don't think you'll be seeing a united party in Denver. And it didn't help to delay the announcement so much that disappointed delegates won't have enough time to try to work up some enthusiasm for Biden, or get used to feigning enthusiasm.
