I can't believe it's been this long. I was a wee sprout, curled up in bed, keeping my clock radio turned down very low so my grandparents, who were in the living room down the hall, couldn't hear it. I found an FM station that still did national news on the hour (no good AM reception in the house, especially not at low volume) and kept waiting for news to leak out. Finally, around 10 PM, it had.
"Sources have confirmed that Democratic Presidential candidate Walter Mondale has picked Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his Vice-Presidential candidate."
Even back then, not yet having reached my 15th birthday, I understood that I was listening to history being made.
This time around, the ticket is historical for different reasons, and the selection doesn't really make much difference, but I still can't help but get excited as I wait. My brain keeps jumping back to 1984 (has it really been almost a quarter of a century?) and watching the mechanical numbers flip over to 59 after the hour, so I knew to turn on the radio and listen for word. I didn't get like this for Lloyd Bentsen in 1988, or Al Gore in 1992, and especially not for Joe Lieberman in 2000.
This time the anticipation is once again at a fever pitch, and bravo to the campaign handlers for managing it this well, and building the excitement.
When the text comes, I may run into the bedroom and flip on KYW (although this time in HD radio) for old time's sake, to hear it the same way again.
