I always thought Barack would pick someone from the South.
Doesn't he need a few southern states to win?

1. No.

Some Southwestern/Western states in certain scenarios, but no truly "Southern" states.

Or all the Kerry states plus Ohio or Florida.

3. An all northern Democratic ticket has not won since 1940
And of course, I am including border states (Truman's Missouri, etc.) as non-northern states here.

6. Yes - but he needs a national name plus experience
to provide depth to the ticket.

A mystery to me -- why wasn't Richardson in the final mix.

Not being a pit bull debater doesn't cut it for me. He has experience plus Hispanic creds in excess. Me thinks there MUST be some reason we do not know about, but that the search committee does.

I hope he has a major assignment or cabinet position to make use of his talents,

9. That's true.
But I wonder if Hispanics in other states know that Richardson is part Hispanic?

7. Actually, no
Go here, change Virginia and Florida from blue to red in the scenario shown, and look at the EV totals. http://www.270towin.com/

11. He would have liked a Virginian but it didn't work out.
For different reasons neither Webb, Kaine, or Warner were feasible.
