Obama picks Sen. Hillary Clinton for VP slot
By Stuart Silverstein
August 23, 2008

In a surprising choice, Barack Obama named Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton as his running mate, creating the “dream team” that many Democratic activists hope will fire up the party and carry the ticket to victory in November.

The decision also pairs two rivals who waged a protracted – and sometimes antagonistic – battle for the party’s presidential nomination.

Obama’s decision – kept secret amid intense speculation as next week’s Democratic convention draws near – was first announced via text messages and e-mails to supporters.

Clinton, 60, brings powerful political assets, including her strong performance among women and working-class white voters in this year’s primaries. Yet she also can be a polarizing figure, and she and her husband, former President Clinton, have many detractors.

During her husband’s presidency, she managed – and was also blamed for fumbling – the administration’s ambitious health care proposal. Yet since moving to New York and being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000, she has become a leading figure in the chamber. She easily won re-election in 2006.

Clinton, if elected to the White House, would be the first woman to win the vice presidency, although not the first Democrat to be nominated for the job. The first was Geraldine Ferraro, who was Walter Mondale’s running mate in 1984.

In her historic bid for the presidency, Clinton won more primaries and delegates than any woman in U.S. history. The drawn-out fight with Obama, however, created ill will between the two politicians’ camps that would need to be resolved in the general election campaign.

3. Not unusual. Most big news sources prepare news like this in advance. No Dewey beats Truman. nt
