Gallup Daily: Election Remains a Statistical Dead Heat

Tenth straight day with Obama up by no more than 3 percentage points

PRINCETON, NJ -- Barack Obama and John McCain remain nearly tied in Gallup Poll Daily tracking, with Obama favored by 46% of national registered voters and McCain by 44%.

Today's result, based on Aug. 20-22 interviewing, represents the last Gallup Poll Daily tracking update on the presidential race based on interviewing conducted entirely before Obama's selection of Delaware Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate was announced early this morning.

The full immediate impact of that decision on voters will not be reflected in Gallup's continuous three-day rolling average results until Tuesday, however it will start to enter the data in Sunday's report. A recent analysis of the impact of past vice-presidential selections on voter preferences by Gallup Poll Managing Editor Jeff Jones, suggests a small but short-lived bounce can generally be expected.

Obama has not held a statistically significant lead over McCain in any Gallup Poll Daily tracking report since Aug. 13 -- or 10 reporting days. This is the longest stretch with Obama leading by no more than three percentage points since before Obama clinched the Democratic nomination in early June. (To view the complete trend since March 7, 2008, click here.)

While Obama would clearly hope the publicity from the upcoming Democratic National Convention will help him break out of the present deadlock -- and historical poll trends show a five point bounce in support for a presidential candidate is typical after each nominating convention -- the fact that neither presidential candidate in the 2004 election received a significant convention bounce puts a question mark over the inevitability of that happening in 2008. -- Lydia Saad

4. When Obama is up it is tied, when McCain is up Obama is behind?
Ever notice that is the way it is always framed in the blurbs with the polls?

6. They did various polls in
Edited on Sat Aug-23-08 12:24 PM by ...of J.Temperance
A variety of European countries, and in each one if they could vote, Senator Obama would be in in their countries by a landslide.

I specifically remember Great Britain would give him 80% over McNutjob, France the vote was in the high 70% over McNutjob and Germany was also in the high 70% over McNutjob.

I mean WTF is wrong with half of the American population, WHY would other nations give Senator Obama a landslide, yet half of the American population can't make their fucking minds up if they want Senator Obama or McNutjob?

The choice IS simple, if they want MORE of what W has spewed up these past eight years, then vote for McNutjob, if they want more chaos, more misery, more troops being sent to die pointlessly in Iraq and even some new wars started, then vote for McNutjob.

If they want a change in direction, some new ideas and the offer of things being given the chance to heal and get better, then vote for Senator Obama.

I mean it's not THAT difficult to understand, but for half of the American population apparently it IS that difficult to understand.

On Edit: Dammit spelling error

9. People do have the option of alternative forms of media to get their news though
The Internet is the key to enlightened news media from across the globe.

Instead of half of the American population, sitting like idiots watching the crap served up by the Nightly News programs, they COULD get their news information from the Internet.

Mind you, I suppose if half of them are dumbass enough to want to vote for McNutjob and actually BELIEVE the crap they hear on the Nightly News programs, I guess they're too moronic to probably even know how to use a computer.

11. I understand and I agree.
People have the choice, but many of them don't realize that they need to look further than what is being presented to us by our "news" corporations.

I think you're being a bit harsh, people are doing the best they know how to do.

12. Maybe
People are doing the best they know how to, but obviously they need to try harder.

They need to realize that the TV news is just NOT the place to go if you want intelligent, non-biased opinions on political issues or even on general issues.
