With all the Hurricanes and Tropical storms, are Floridians concerned with Global Warming?

It just surprises me that Florida residents would continue to vote Republican when their own property and livelihood is threatened by Global Warming and increased number of storms.

Any Florida residents have some thoughts on this?

1. It's not global warming. It's God's wrath for all...

...the "sinful living" going on in Miami. Just gotta pray harder and elect some more God-fearin' family-values Republicans, and everything will go back to normal.

Why introduce boring science when fruitloop religion explains everything?

2. Not the ones I know. But they have been too busy just dealing with the economics of the situation
My fella was just there last week. Lots of closed up shops in his hometown...

3. It's a "purple" state and we don't all vote Republican
a Democrat was Governor for at least the first ten years when I moved here. I have a dem congressman and senator. Florida didn't really start "going for the repugs" until Diebold moved in.

And yes, climate change is my top issue. No other issue matters when most of life on earth can no longer survive.

4. I do, but you probably won't agree with my thoughts....
I can't explain why repukes do anything, but as far as my own opinion; I'm not totally convinced about global warming. Let me rephrase that. I believe it's happening, but I think it's a natural cycle that the earth goes through every few million years. Freeze, thaw, freeze thaw, it's been going on forever.

7. There are smart people on both sides of the issue...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scientists_opposing_the_mainstream_scientific_assessment_of_global_warming

... since I'm not a scientist myself, I think that buying into one group's thinking versus the other is more of an act of faith than anything. Therefore, I chose to remain "agnostic".

10. Only 11% Disagree
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 10:27 AM by Quixote1818
Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting states that the report said that 67% of the scientists said that human-induced global warming was occurring, with 11% disagreeing and the rest undecided.<64>

So you are in with the 11%?

13. Ok then, so you are with the 22%
Science is about probability not absolutes. The probability is strongly on the side that humans are helping to create global warming. The vast, vast majority of scientists have crunched the numbers and with a very high degree of certainty a very high % of scientists have come to this conclusion.

I remember learning about Global Warming back in the 70's before much was showing up, then sure enough 30 years later the last few years have been the warmest on record.

If you choose to ignore the experts then fine but you are the one ignoring math and probability that has been crunched by a shit load of experts.

9. Hurricane alley comments...you asked for them.
Obama said yes to drilling, and I've heard LOTS of anger over that issue. It hurt his campaign here. That one issue will cost more independent and green voters than any other. Even Jeb said no to drilling. Florida does not have a state income tax, it has a very large number of older (conservative) folks, millionaires who moved here to avoid taxes, and the vacation economy depends on beaches. Property values depend on pristine coastlines. There are lots of boats (most in the US) and I know from experience that it's easy to run into oil rigs sailing across the gulf.

A large portion of "residents" are snow birds who vote, but only live in Florida in the winter. If the Florida house blows away, they'll just put up another. Property owners are more unhappy with the inability to get homeowner's insurance than anything else. The most anger at the GOP is not having a solution to the homeowners insurance problems. Crist won election almost on that single issue, and he's catching flack for not fixing the problem yet. Crist gets lots of support from the insurance industry.

Democrats could win this state with a health care bill (many supported Hillary for that issue alone), keeping the beaches pretty for tourist business and summer homes (no drilling), and it wouldn't hurt to have a conservative woman on the ticket. I suspect that McCain's pollsters know that...there's a church on every corner down here. The older, retired folks vote in large percentages and are demographically conservative women who see a doctor every week.

Yes, there is concern about global warming and hurricanes. Of course, the snow birds and aren't here in the summer but will be back in time to vote.
