An analogy can be drawn between a Presidential Race and any other form of race with apparently equal competitors. It all comes down to who makes the biggest mistakes. Most racers know that all things equal, this is what it boils down to. Most races are won by who makes the least and smallest mistakes. Didn't quite get that turn right, lose 0.005 seconds off a perfect circuit. Got bumped by another racer, lose 0.01 seconds. Spin out of control, even if you don't hit the wall: lose 10 seconds.
That's what McCain has done with the Palin pick. He's spun out of control. Unless Obama does the same, the race is over. The only question now is can he get it back under control or is he going to smack into a wall?
The answer to that is, does he dump Palin and pick a more safe, thoroughly vetted choice or does he keep Palin. If he chooses a different running mate, he'll get the car back under control and he can still finish, with some shred of dignity. He may even win if Obama makes a big mistake or a bombshell is dropped on his campaign, an extremely unlikely event at this point. But at least he'll still be in the running. If he stays with Palin, he's hit the wall and will not, in all likelihood finish the race. He might finish, but this "car" will be so damaged that he will be lapped several times by Team Obama.
This is where this race has taken us. This is where we are at. McCain is in a tough spot and he's unlikely to recover. The best thing he can do is get control of it and finish with the dignity he has left, what little there is.
