I think I get it now.
Why did the inventors of Bush-Cheney go with the underqualified eye candy candidate who has inspired creative new acronyms ending in ILF? Watching the standing, blinking, clapping corpse standing behind her it hit me what this theater is all about. The genius of Karl Rove is to re-frame the contest in a new way. We’re not talking about an enfeebled, foul tempered senior citizen facing an accomplished, charismatic younger opponent. The contest is now the white woman versus the black man, always a favorite in the redder states. He repeats a McCain line about lipstick and pigs and the McCain people cry rape. Maybe I’ve become as cynical as American politics, but I wouldn’t bet they haven’t talked about just such a strategy.

2. While I think we can blame all the evils of the world on Rove....
... I dont think we can give him credit ... or blame, whatever .... for Palin.

In the days following her announcemt as VP (before we found out how supercool and talented she was at reading a written speech) Rove was CLEARLY not impressed with her. He wasn't disparaging the choice but he was NOT gushing. I remember it clearly because I took a great deal of comfort in his lack of gushing.

His lack of enthusiasm and an almost tinge of worry in his voice was very telling.

4. Classically labeled in politics as "framing the debate"
and that is exactly how the Republicans have chosen to hang the frame, around superfluous silliness instead of the real issues. I hope Obama takes back the "framing of the debate" gauntlet. That is how he "takes" McCain and wins.

5. I think her popularity took both the Dems AND the Republicans by surprise.
Lucky move.

I remember when they first announced, I thought that would be it, period. That the Repubs would run screaming for the exits and we'd waltz across the finish line. I honestly think they had no idea that people would go ga ga over her.
