Was this lonestarnot's story? Big McCain drug revelation!
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 11:35 AM by Cheney Killed Bambi
Right now, it's being reported on by Openleft and Rawstory. Hopefully, this will break bigger.

Here is Open Left.

A whistleblower is coming forth against John and Cindy McCain, and the picture he is painting is not a pretty one. You've probably heard about Cindy McCain stealing prescription drugs from her charity in the 1990s. Today, Tom Gosinski, her former employee and a close friend of the McCain's, came out on the record about the entire sordid episode. And it appears that McCain used his Senate staff and resources to cover up Cindy's drug use, and potentially to prevent the Drug Enforcement Agency from investigating his wife's theft of illegal prescription drugs. John McCain certainly used his political connections to begin a campaign of intimidation against Gosinski, because at the time - this was after the Keating 5 scandal - another major scandal would have derailed his career. Gosinski stayed quiet out of fear until today; a recent fight with cancer has strengthened his resolve. As he told me today, if he can beat cancer, he can go on the record regarding how the McCain's do business.

6. That accusation was reported back then.
In fact it's right there in the beginning of the article I linked.

12. What information?
Point me to a single bit of information on this that is:

1) Substantiated and credible.

2) Wasn't reported fourteen years ago.

That's why it's called the NEWs.

Edit: And you still haven't answered my question. What is this new information you claim exists on this story?

17. Yes, but there was no evidence
or record of McCain's direct involvement at that time. Now there appears to be, and that is a very big deal.

If he did, in fact, inpede a DEA and/or state investigation and get Cindy a diplomatic passport so she could travel freely between countries without being searched, in order to hide her drugs, that's a pretty big deal. Not to mention the tiny fact that he has been lying about for 15+ years.

CNN has been showing his bio over the last couple of week where he states that he didn't know anything about it.

So, not only does that make John McCain a liar but, more importantly, he abused the power of his office to interfere with a DEA investigation and help his wife cover up a crime.

It's a huge deal if there is evidence. We'll see what the lazy-ass media does with it.

18. That's not really new. OBVIOUSLY she got away with it because of being married to a senator
So unfortunately the story amounts to nothing more than 'more of what you knew already'. If there were a letter or a recording of McCain threatening someone it would be hot, but one guy reiterating what everyone already assumed to be true is not such a big deal. It's not that he's wrong or should keep silent (I applaud him for speaking out), but it's not news to most people.

3. If it had the legs and devastating effect that we were hoping for, it would
already be on CNN and MSNBC and NYT, et al.

If Openleft and Rawstory have it, the big boys do, too.

5. They're just being more cautious
and taking more time to do their reporting. I would bet at least one major outlet will have something by early next week.

14. If WaPo gets a second source, this explodes.
If they don't, it's blog fodder and will die quickly.

I don't believe that WaPo would even touch this without a second source. So I'm hoping that bizarre video link means that they've got something, but they're holding it until tomorrow. They broke that big oil & sex scandal yesterday, today is not a breaking news kind of day, so I guess we'll just have to see about tomorrow.

I find it interesting that they haven't completely shut down that link. You can still post comments there.

16. What second source?
The story is a matter of public record. The lawsuit is a matter of public record. His journals are a matter of public record. What "second source" could one possibly need, and what would you expect that second source to provide?

21. Someone other than Gosinski.
Perhaps a DEA agent, a public servant in Arizona who helped make this go away...

Something that doesn't immediately trace back to Gosinski, as everything you've listed does.

10. lonestarnot=nigerian email scam
It's okay, if you got taken, that's how con men work, they prey on desires and weaknesses. In this case, desire to see the dark cabal of McBush tipped into the ocean once and for all. Or this individual may just be stunningly politically naive or a bit mentally ill.

But old adages are old adages for a reason, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. And think about it, if you really had info that could bring down McCain, who in their RIGHT mind would post it on a public board and threaten it's veracity later?

I'm not saying ignore the story, look into it, it's one piece of building a PROFILE of a man who all his life has been something other than what he claims he is-this is the story's greatest potential. Keating 5, his divorce, the rape jokes, etc. In this story, if true, he comes across as someone willing to use influence for personal gain, even if that gain is understandable. And it makes for a nice soap opera if nothing else.

But in going after scandals, the big one that'll bring them down, we kind of miss the elephant in the room- things suck, he's going to make it worse- it's that simple. Nothing's going to fall from the sky- it's us that will make it happen, and we can.

The DEA getting involved with small-time prescription drug abuse?
I would hope any news organization would have hard evidence on this one.
