Overexposure and overhype are our best friends with Sarah Palin
I'm about ready to concede that Palin is not the bimbo or redneck I thought she was when she was first nominated.

Having said that, a great part of her appeal is the novelty and newness factor. Let's assume that in the next 3 weeks she does well in the interviews and debates (fairly big assumption, but let's make it). If that happens, she will be known as a pretty strong VICE PRESIDENTIAL candidate. The public's curiosity will turn to boredom, and everyone will then realize that nobody ever sees vice presidents in public. That will be especially true if McCain wins because the last thing he wants is to feed a campaign among Republicans to push him out in favor of Palin in 2012. I think Obama's surrogates will make frequent mention of that fact if Palin starts to look like the stronger part of the ticket.

Given the foregoing, I think McCain is making a mistake by rolling out Palin now. I think it would have been smarter to expose her in dribs and drabs, beginning with the VP debate in October. Because the more exposure she gets in September, and the more the public's curiosity about her is satisfied, the earlier people will move onto something else. Even if she makes a great impression, she's still only the VP candidate and so her upside is far lower than if the Republicans had nominated an actual presidential candidate who captured the public's imagination like Palin has, for now at least.

1. She will continue to be a novelty because she is the first
potential female going into the WH, unfortunately. The other novelty is that the repukes are patting themselves on the back because they beat the Dems in getting a woman on the ticket.

5. Remember this clip of McCain describing the VP's role? Anyone see a green-eyed monster lurking?

7. She's not getting much "exposure", though
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 04:28 PM by brentspeak
They trot her out in carefully-scripted scenarios designed to prevent the American public from learning anything more about her. She makes her little speech, waves her hand, does a meaningless 'thumb's-up' sign, signs a few autographs, gets in a limo -- and that's it.

And her idiotic fans are perfectly happy NOT to have her answer tough questions.
