Just got done watching Palin on ABC. She said that she's so proud of her son and his independent decision to join the military and go to Iraq. She said he decided to go to war and not take the "easy way out." Heh. I guess that my being raised by a single mother on disability who was not able to save money for my college education is the "easy way out." I guess that going from minimum wage job to minimum wage job to save up enough money to get a car to commute 32 miles to school is the "easy way out." I guess going into student debt all on my own to go to the only school I can afford to go to (business school) is the "easy way out." Now, I'm not in any way trying to bash the soldiers or the veterans. I just don't like the asinine, condescending way she answers questions. Or not answers questions - Charlie could not get that woman to answer his last question, no way no how!

Anyway, it's all part and parcel of the disgusting militarization of our culture. I'm totally sickened by all the "hero" crap that's been overlaid on military service.

While I will grant that for some people, going into military service is apparently personally fulfilling, I simply see no "heroism" in signing up to be the muscle for empire.

I'm all for defense -- a force to repel any and all invaders -- but that's not what our military is used for.
