GOP campaign downplays Palin book-banning inquiry

WASILLA, Alaska (AP) — The McCain campaign is defending Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's much-criticized inquiry into banning books at her hometown library, saying her questions were only hypothetical.

Shortly after taking office in 1996 as mayor of Wasilla, a city of about 7,000 people, Palin asked the city's head librarian about banning books. Later, the librarian was notified by Palin that she was being fired, although Palin backed off under pressure.

Palin alleged attempt at book-banning has been a matter of intense interest since Republican presidential nominee John McCain named her as his running mate last month.

Taylor Griffin, a spokesman for the McCain campaign, said Thursday that Palin asked the head librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, on three occasions how she would react to attempts at banning books. He said the questions, in the fall of 1996, were hypothetical and entirely appropriate. He said a patron had asked the library to remove a title the year before and the mayor wanted to understand how such disputes were handled.

8. Yes but it diverts attention away from Real Issues
Like the economy and the fact it takes a small loan to fill your car now days because of the policies McSame and his buddy Phil Gramm enacted.

Those might be issues Swing Voters are likely to be moved by

10. Don't worry
The issues will be addressed and are being addressed in Obama ads - as well as in his and Biden's appearances. The governor is deflating faster than a set of slashed tires as we speak.

11. Just advocating a little activism here
Sent out an Email to the editor of Factcheck.org already and posted a cut and paste letter for other DU-ers as well on this issue.

I ask myself every day - "What can I do to help Obama get Elected", and I just don't see "Wallowing with Pigs in the Mud" as 1 of them. Sure you can "Put Lipstick on a Pig" but if your wallowing in the mud with it, you still get dirty"

2. Which ended hypothetically enough by Emmons being 'allowed' to return to work...
after a hypothetical firing by the hypothetical Mayor Palin and a hypothetical protest by 100 local residents.

Oh how well I know

My Niece was hired by the State Dept as a Policy Analyst without some much as a 2yr college degree. Just goes to the right church and sings the praises of George Bush and his Holy War in Iraq

3. Hmmmm. Maybe asking one question may have been appropriate
Book banning fascists can be found in just about any community in America. But why continue to ask the question, and then attempt to fire the librarian. Hmmmmm.

She obviously doesn't understand or respect the First Amendment.

12. This is why Ed Koch publicly endorsed Obama today on CNN.
You never know what the straw-breaker will be for a person. He was upset about this, but not her lack of national security competence. He wouldn't be talked out of it either, when the CNN anchor (wrongly) told him the story was debunked. (If it was so hypothetical - which isn't kosher anyway - why was the librarian fired at all?) Koch insisted he wouldn't change his mind unless the NYT printed a retraction!
