WOW - Human Society Article - Palin paid $400,000 to defeat bill to stop aerial shooting!
A few weeks ago I listed the video's posted on YouTube of aerial shooting condoned by Palin and I was told by a fellow DU member who used to live in AK, that the reason was to boost the wildlife for high rolling hunters that come up there and pay big $$. Now there is proof that they were correct in the following article from the Human Society:

https://community.hsus.org/humane/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=27497157

(snip)

Palin engineered a campaign of shooting predators from airplanes and helicopters, in order to artificially boost the populations of moose and caribou for trophy hunters. She offered a $150 bounty for the left foreleg of each dead wolf as an economic incentive for pilots and aerial gunners to kill more of the animals, even though Alaska voters had twice approved a ban on the practice. This year, the issue was up again for a vote of the people, and Palin led the fight against it -- in fact, she helped to spend $400,000 of public funds to defeat the initiative.

..........

And now we all know the rest of the story!

3. Yes - And I wonder if some of that $400,000 came from the plane she "sold" to the hunters!
Anyone know if that is where some of it came from? I read somewhere that someone associated with the big time hunters that come to AK had bought that plane she said she put on eBay. Would love to know!!

18. Found the reference - it is used for the hunters!! Link -
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/05/sarah-palins-strange-ebay_n_124097.html

After going unsold for months, the jet was put into the hands of Turbo North Aviation, an Anchorage aircraft broker, which put an asking price of $2.45 million on the nearly $2.7 million jet. It quickly sold to Alaska businessman Larry Reynolds for $2.1 million ($31,000 of which went to Turbo Aviation). Today the Westwind II jet spends its days ushering wealthy hunters around Alaska and Russia!

2. Then there's this: 172 Scientists Protest Alaska's Aerial Wolf Hunting
http://www.alaskawolfkill.com/Palin_Letter.html

Dear Governor Palin:

As scientists and other wildlife professionals, we urge you to strengthen the application of science-based wildlife management to sound policy decisions, especially for those Alaska programs related to predator control. We are concerned with potential problems of managing and conserving large mammalian carnivores and their ungulate prey resulting from recent approval of predator control programs designed to severely reduce populations of gray wolves, black bears and brown bears. We strongly urge the State of Alaska to gather data necessary to justify, implement, monitor and evaluate these programs so that management practices will ensure sustained populations of both predators and prey.

Starting in 2003 Alaska approved and implemented five predator control programs in interior and southcentral parts of the state designed to severely reduce wolves and bears in order to increase numbers of moose and caribou for hunters. These are lethal control programs where private pilots are authorized to shoot wolves with airplanes and hunters and trappers are encouraged to take large numbers of wolves and bears. These programs now total nearly 60,000 square miles of state and federal land. Nearly 700 wolves have been killed to date. The goal for several of these programs is to reduce the wolf populations by 80% of estimated pre-control numbers and to hold them at that level for an undetermined period. This is the largest predator control program since statehood.

Recently, black and brown bears were targeted in one area for reductions of 60% by authorizing hunting methods never before practiced in Alaska. These include shooting of female bears with cubs, or cubs themselves. Liberal bear baiting regulations, year-long open seasons, sale of hides and skulls, same-day airborne hunting and use of airplanes for spotting bears were also approved by the Board of Game.

These actions have drawn the attention of professional wildlife biologists worldwide. We are aware that the American Society of Mammalogists has sent three letters of concern and passed a resolution regarding wolf management in Alaska. Issues surrounding Alaska's predator control were discussed in September 2006 at The Wildlife Society's annual meeting in Anchorage and concerns were raised over the scientific basis of the control programs. These concerns are based on knowing the end result of similar large-scale predator control programs in other areas of the world that were not based on sound science. Often, predators subject to such programs were unable to sustain viable populations....

6. I know its sickening... be sure to bookmark that
I have had several people say - but the wolves are over populated - that letter shuts them up right away. Besides the fact that arial hunting increases the wolf population by killing the leaders of the packs (the leader manages reproduction - with out the leader they all mate).

9. Yes Will Do! The very idea that this is humane is astounding! What kind of mind thinks this?
Let alone a person who says they are a Christian who was told to protect the earth and all the wildlife in it!

God said "let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the wild animals and over all the creatures that move along the ground." (Gen. 1:26)

31. I think what Michael Vick did was horrible and he should spend
at least 10 yrs of his life in jail.

Yep, you're right. My apologies.

IF a very rich black guy were on one of those expensive guided hunts in AK nothing would happen to him. It's about THE MONEY.

Hunting wolves ranks up there in cruelty, but their deaths aren't as cruel as what Vick did to his dogs.

I also wondered if the AK people even were aware of the money being spent and where it came from. If I were a citizen of AK I would sure as heck want to know and I also wondered if the plane sale that has been reported (see my earlier post) as being used by these high roller hunters wasn't part of the "payment" to allow this to happen.

39. Because much of Alaska is roadless, and it's quicker and easier for them to 'get rid of'
those terrible wolves (heavy sarcasm here) by airplane or helicopter than it is to actually get out there and go kill 'em. I've known about this policy and hated these bastards for many years, and as others have pointed out, the voters have voted against it TWICE! But they keep allowing it.
