Is skipping the debate McCain's "Rose Garden" strategy? That didn't work too well for Carter.
All props to Jimmy Carter, who I greatly admire, but his Rose Garden strategy of withdrawing from campaigning while our citizens were held hostage in Iran didn't work too well. And McCain is doing the same thing, with much less justification. Bottom line: Americans want fighters who roll up their sleeves during a time of crisis, not "leaders" who withdraw from the public sphere.

I'm guessing McCain's internals are terrible, and that the first Hail Mary - Palin - is now scaring the hell out of him and his handlers.

Anyway, this imperious withdrawal from public scrutiny is ridiculous. Only dittoheads support it.

1. It actually worked for a while early on in the hostage crisis, but
as the months went on by June of 1980 Carter abandoned that strategy. But by then he had an insurmountable lead over Sen. Kennedy in delegates.
