I think McCain is not going to show. He did the same thing in 2000 to Bush (though it did not work out for him obviously).

McCain is going for an extreme Hail Mary pass.
He figures at this pace his poll numbers will continue falling, Palin has turned into a complete joke, Obama will win on Economy and that issue isn't going any where, tomorrow was to be his war mongering night, etc.. His campaign is falling apart.

If he takes all of the attention on this and makes it out like he saved the day, some people might believe that shit.
And he's banking on it.

5. He will be his usual gorgeous...
...intelligent self. He'll talk to the public and explain how he can walk and chew gum at the same time. He'll turn it into a town hall and take questions.

How about spend as much of it as he wants explaining this to the entire country:

And then going home and getting a good night's sleep because the election will be over.

13. I understand that the rules require 2 candidates, so if McCain doesn't show . . .
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 11:56 PM by MrModerate
No debate:

. . . A common misconception is that the 90-minute debate would feature Obama, moderator Jim Lehrer and an empty chair if McCain clung to his resolve to stay in Washington. But such a scene -- frequently invoked by talk-radio hosts and bloggers -- is about the only thing guaranteed not to happen on Friday night. "The law requires that there must be two candidates for a debate," said Fahrenkopf, a former GOP national chairman, who helped establish the bipartisan debate commission in 1986. "If we did anything else, we would be making an in-kind contribution to the Obama campaign."

but couldn't it be argued that it was a two-party where one person simply didn't show, and could go ahead of that basis?

23. McCain WILL show up -- This is a pattern -- This was just a stunt to get attention...now he can go
in and blah blah about how he has a "record" of showing he was trying to help the people in a crisis by being on the brink of not showing up. He will show up..mark my words.

25. This is like that West Wing episode
when President Bartlet walked to a meeting with Congress and the leadership didn't let him in. Obama will look like the leader ready to speak to the American people while McCain cowers in a corner while he takes a time out. Show up or not, this gamble did not work. He is DONE.

wHATEVER BARACK SAYS I WILL BE LISTENING. Hey he can have a 90 minute press conference for all I care. Can't wait for this to play out.

The bottom line is, unless you are among the etxreme pro mccain base---this is a no winner, pure lose lose for mccain. He looks erratic, crazy and cowardly. And if you dont think the press--the 800 lb gorilla operation in the room is not going to handily skewer this guy for bailing you are wrong.

37. He is going to speak to this country as a president should. He will
give us his plan to work on this mess! He will show this country that the one person that is missing is the same one that has been "missing" for years now. He will show us that we don't "miss" McCain and that he is not needed. We will hear intelligence and not the ridiculous rantings of a confused, flip-flopping, card reading fool. Trust me, it will be a breath of fresh air!

39. Hopefully he and Biden can use the free 90 minutes as a campaign speech/program
Use the time to actually discuss how this economy issue will affect national security. Because even though lots of people don't like what Bill said, he was right about this:

Preparing to mortgage our country to China WILL be a security issue.

Let's just hope they don't decide that China deserves some kind of "security interest" in the loans.
