MSNBC: Cheney cancels trip to be available for the negotiations.
They're playing out a scenario where there is an agreement today and McCain is spun as the reason why the sides came together. The Democrats are well aware of this, so we'll see what happens.

1. The bigger problem isn't McLiar, but rather the House republicans....

"According to one GOP lawmaker, some House Republicans are saying privately that they'd rather "let the markets crash" than sign on to a massive bailout.

"For the sake of the altar of the free market system, do you accept a Great Depression?" the member asked.

...

"At the end of the day, there's a lot of people thinking about how to rebuild this party," said GOP strategist Ed Rollins on CNN, "and do we want to rebuild it with John McCain, who's always kind of questionable on the basic facts of fiscal control, all the rest of it, immigration. And I think to a certain extent this 110, 115 members of this study group are saying, here's the time to draw the line in the sand."

"That's pretty scary stuff that they're thinking about party right now and not country, is that what you're saying?" responded host Anderson Cooper.

"I think they're, yes, they're thinking about themselves," said Rollins. "I think they don't think that the threat is as great as a lot of other people do."

2. Those repubs can present a much less costly plan.
How can Democrats vote against that? I read yesterday that this was the situation with the Iraq War Resolution. Democrats proposal was shot down. Repubs subsequent proposal went through. Democrats were ready to vote in support of the bailout yesterday. The repub (Rove) gameplan, I think, is for McCain to be presented as saving the day. Now, if the conservative repubs really want no bailout, it's a different story and McCain is toast.
