McCain Camp statement re: WH meeting: "John McCain listened to all sides so he could help focus..."

A statement from the GOP nom's campaign on his decision to face off against Barack Obama tonight in Oxford, MS, for the first presidential debate of the general election:

...

"The difference between Barack Obama and John McCain was apparent during the White House meeting yesterday where Barack Obama's priority was political posturing in his opening monologue defending the package as it stands. John McCain listened to all sides so he could help focus the debate on finding a bipartisan resolution that is in the interest of taxpayers and homeowners. The Democratic interests stood together in opposition to an agreement that would accommodate additional taxpayer protections.

Reid: McCain said nothing of substance at White House

The aftermath of the White House meeting has devolved into a full blown partisan affair.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) completely dismissed McCain's role in the meeting, saying that he spoke last, said nothing important and had little to do with the negotiations.

"Anyone in that meeting who tried to understand what John McCain said in that meeting, couldn't" understand whether he supported the deal, Reid said, according to a clip aired on MSNBC. "He didn't say anything substantive. ... He was the last person to talk in that meeting."

This isn't sounding like a very bipartisan, bicameral moment _ quite a change from the morning meeting where congressional negotiators thought they had a "fundamental agreement."
