Sarah Palin’s Latest Interview Is Making People Sad - NYmag.com

Nice round-up of the palin interviews...
http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2008/09/links_13.html

<snip>
The mood over Sarah Palin is changing. Her political naysayers used to delight in her floundering her way through interviews (okay, that one interview with Charlie Gibson). They enjoyed pointing out her lack of credentials. But her interview with Katie Couric over the past two nights has elicited a different response — like cringing. No longer is there joy in Palin's struggles. Watching her has become like watching one of those hopeless singers trying out for American Idol: First you laugh. Then you laugh some more. Maybe after that you laugh a little bit more. And as the talentless contestant soldiers on, despite the judges' derision, you recognize that this person, despite their best efforts, doesn't even realize that they don't have what it takes. And that makes you kind of sad.

• Alessandra Stanley writes that "in some ways it was the worst" interview Palin has done. The exchange on Russia was "startling," her answer "surprisingly wobbly." While it's "perhaps understandable" that Palin "felt nervous," it still "wasn’t a reassuring performance."

1. Sarah's biggest problem is her lost confidence. That's all she ever had going for her.
And it's shattered now.

7. She has no one to blame for that but herself...
...and possibly the McCain handlers who have been keeping her under wraps.

For example, I'm fairly certain she still chooses her own clothes, daily. Which leads one to ask what in the bloody hell made her decide it would be a good idea to wear an outfit that looked like it had been made directly off of the German Waffen-SS uniform pattern while going to Ground Zero?!

Beyond that, my thoughts are if she REALLY believes she's qualified, why hasn't she been fighting the McCain campaign tooth-and-nail to get out of the box they shoved her in? Nothing erodes confidence faster than letting someone else dictate to you exactly what you're going to do because that implies that the person you're running with has absolutely no faith in you.

Awesome vetting process, Johnny!

54. in the pink suit she wore for the Couric interview
she kinda reminded me of the sadistic Thatcher type character in Harry Potter. Not that I think about it, she really reminds me of her, personality-wise.

19. I think you are correct - she was riding that false confidence - and is now
discovering how inadequately prepared she really is.

Could lead to devastation at her debate. That Putin answer was off the chart.

61. I thought of her reckless comment about Putin tonight when McCain mocked Obama.
McCain - the hypocrite - had the nerve to mock Obama for suggesting that we might have to strike Pakistan. "You can't just say that," blustered the old geezer. Never mind his "bomb bomb Iran" comment - how's that for reckless?

But what about his VP talking about Putin "rearing his head?" That's reckless.

73. Which is why Obama's response calling-out McCain on his "bomb Iran" singing ...
... and threatening North Korea with "extinction" was so great. Obama completely pwned McCain with that exchange, which McCain opened himself up for. Had McCain not chided Obama for allegedly imprudent comments, Obama never could have brought-up the "bomb Iran" issue without appearing petty. That one really had to hurt McCain.

45. Sarah's biggest problem from the start has been that she's over-confident.
Cocky, even. Gee, Sarah, perhaps you should have taken the time to blink and think before accepting the Vice Presidential nomination. But then, not knowing what the VP does, you probably just assumed it would be a walk in the park. Sadly for you, it's been a walk through the dog park, and you've stepped in it big time.

No sadness here. If the shoe was on the other foot, Palin would be out there HERSELF ridiculing Obama. She already ridiculed his community service background at the RNC, and called him naive in the Couric interview.

I don't feel sorry for her one bit.

56. I did until last night.
Watching Olberman and Maddow replay that clip was funny...for a bit.

Then, I have to admit, I got a little scared. I mean, I actually have a living, breathing friend who adores her. Thinks she is the greatest thing since sliced bread. AND, this is the scary part. Same friend has a significantly disabled child. When I tried to explain Palin's stance on funding to the disabled, she said it was all lies.

Your typical Faux News watcher. Believes everything that Fox says.

That kind of lemming like behavior frightens me. Palin was funny at first, but I don't think I will relax until the debate. What happened this week has me a little nervous. Wondering what they're up to.

I hope Joe absolutely wipes the floor with her.

5. I'm losing friends
Anyone who still supports her, with the wealth of evidence that she's just a complete moron who is utterly out of her depth and is actually a THREAT to the WORLD -- and I do still know people who like her, support her -- I have nothing more to say to those people. I don't even know how to talk to them. I don't know what I'd say if I tried. Obviously, there is no convincing them, if they have seen her talk and are still unconvinced. McCain supporters I can at least maybe sort of see why someone, like a rich white veteran, might support him from a certain angle, and we could talk about why Obama is better for all of us, and disagree. But a Palin supporter sees and hears and processes reality so fundamentally different from the way I do, we might as well be from different planets.

12. Trophy Candidate
Sarah Palin has been able to get by throughout her entire life on her looks. She is billed as Miss Congeniality. It is my experience that usually those who are noted for the congenial temperament are generally a people without any convictions and are nothing more than an agreeable wimps. It has been amply demonstrated that this empress has no clothes. She is as shallow as the man who chose her to be his running mate. I can easily imagine how she could have been brainwashed into embracing a nitwit religion that believes the world was created 6000 years ago and that the end is near since she is intellectually vacuous.

Miss Congeniality??? I find her annoying, arrogant, egocentric, shallow, air headed and all-in-all not a very nice person. Her jabs at Obama are particularly annoying because it is she who is naive regarding anything intellectually challenging to a 5th grader.

a self-aware politician with her responsibilities (infant with downs, pregnant teenager) would have. but her primitive religion & decent-for-alaska looks have allowed her to get to this point with no introspection, no insight into her abilities & limitations.

i felt sorry for her from the first time i saw her. what oured forth for me was a combination of provincialism, ambition, hubris, and naivete. but i go to empathy mode very quickly. my wife & daughter still have the knives out. i think they'll get to empathy on thursday night.

may she know peace. once obama is elected.

31. Inept individuals ooze confidence, study finds
There are many incompetent people in the world. Dr. David Dunning is haunted by the fear he might be one of them.

Dunning, a professor of psychology at Cornell, worries about this because, according to his research, most incompetent people do not know they are incompetent.

On the contrary. People who do things badly, Dunning has found in studies conducted with a graduate student, Justin Kruger, are usually supremely confident of their abilities -- more confident, in fact, than people who do things well.

if you are supremely confident in your abilities then you would see no need to improve oneself. A person who can more accurately assess themselves is more likely to work harder for improvement and thus be more competent.

it requires a minimum level of competence to realize you are incompetent.

Therein lies the problem with the republicans; they are not competent enough to see their own incompetence.

That's probably as high as someone with her lack of education and language skills can hope to attain. I can't figure out how she became Governor. If she had dedicated herself to expanding her mind over the years, she might have gone farther. But it seems that she probably doesn't even read. Someone who had read a great deal in her life would have acquired stronger language skills and would not be having such enormous problems in communicating relatively simple thoughts.

64. On the day she was selected, I predicted she would "wilt" under the pressure of the press
My republican brother was crowing about what a great pick she was, and I sent him an email in which I railed about her lack of experience and knowledge, and remarked on her lack of experience with the national press. I predicted she would wilt under the pressure -- and I was right.

Watching the Couric interview was squirm-inducing, I admit. But then I got angry, as I thought about the fact that she is representing women, and how insulting it is that she is so completely unqualified and is in this position. There are so many QUALIFIED women. She doesn't deserve this spotlight.

77. That's really the saddest thing I'm seeing, Palin doing such damage ...
... to the work of so many women before her. Palin's performance as a candidate has not exactly built upon the work of Hillary Clinton, Barbara Boxer, Kathleen Sebilius, Janet Napolitano, etc. Palin's such a lightweight compared to every female politician I can think of, aside from Michelle Bachman.

78. Exactly!!!
It makes me ill. It is so stereotypically Republican to pick the "babe" over other qualified women candidates that McCain could have chosen.

79. "stereotypically Republican" ... so very true, but at least they're consistent
Republicans don't really think women are qualified to govern, so McCain didn't really concern himself with the details of Palin's experience; the choice was purely superficial and identity-based (religious Right, female, etc).

Just like Republicans continue their blind devotion to the anti-government beliefs of Ronald Reagan, as exemplified by his "government is the problem" soundbite. Republicans don't believe that government can do good and view government as corrupt, and so don't concern themselves with effective government once they win election and corruptly leverage their position for the benefit of themselves and their cronies.

65. the GOP had many tested and experienced women politicians to choose from...guess they weren't pretty
enuff. Or perhaps the repubs were using their supreme court choosing strategy... find a hard core rightwinger with no paper trail. The result is they passed over many GOP women with serious debate experience.

67. If you're sad, you're a better person than me. I want her to fall HARD.
And take McCain with her.

Bad singers, I can feel sorry for. Perenially lying politicians, no way.

70. Her first mistake was to accept the nomination... she has only herself to blame.
She has a family who needs her, which would be hard enough to do being governor, but to abandon her family for a shot at the V.P. really puts her priorities out there for all to see and it is NOT family, it is her... all about her.

71. Her approval rating is dropping even in her home state.
From KO and Maddow yesterday.

When she was first announced as the Republican VP candidate, her approval rating in Alaska was 82%.

Now, it's 68%. Looks like even with Alaskans, the more they find out about her, the less they like.
