I'm sick of Palin's use of "Hockey Moms" to imply that she's just like the average American.
Being a hockey mom is expensive! The ice time, team fees, league fees and equipment are all expensive! Many Americans these days are wondering how to fill the gas tank, how to put food on the table, and how to heat their homes this winter. They don't have hundreds of dollars to toss down on being a Hockey Mom. It's all they can do to buy school clothes for their kids, never mind support expensive extra-curriculars.

Sarah Palin can take her "I'm a Hockey Mom just like you!" crap and shove it.

1. With a Gov salary at $250 k and First dude's $170k last year...
... how are they your average Jane and Joe 6-pack again?

I ain't got no private plane or 5 properties and we're considered upper middle class!

15. Careful with your facts
According to Reuters( http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSTRE4927WN20081003) that they made a *combined* $166,080 last year. That's more than me and my wife, but it's not crazy high.

My facts are correct as per Sarah's and Todd's tax records.

17. I don't mind be corrected
but the link you gave confirms my numbers: Just under $170K in '07 and $130K in '06.

If you have a resource that shows $250K income, I'd like to see it.

Best,
JinG

23. We were both wrong.

*edited to include link

Estimates of the Palins income according to the Anchorage Daily per 10/2/2008: http://www.adn.com/sarah-palin/story/543404.html

<snip> The Palins' total income last year was split almost evenly between Sarah Palin's white-collar job and her husband's blue-collar work.

Sarah Palin's salary as governor was $125,000; Todd Palin took in $46,790 as a part-time oil production operator for BP Alaska in Prudhoe Bay, plus $46,265 in commercial fishing income and $10,500 in Iron Dog snowmachine race winnings.

These figures do not include nearly $17,000 in per diem payments Palin received for 312 nights spent in her own home since she was elected governor; she also has received $43,490 to cover travel costs for her husband and children.

In addition, each member of the Palin family received $1,654 in state oil royalties paid to all Alaskans." <snip>

I should've written that the Palins total estimated income is over $295,571 for 2007.

You should've broken down the incomes as shown above instead of the amount you listed which is wrong as well.

Lost in our argument was the thread's topic: Sarah Palin selling herself as a Jane 6-pack which she definitely is NOT being worth $1.2 million. Don't know many Joe's and Jane's 6-pack worth over $1.2 million. Do you?

However, I'm sure Sarah would appreciate your defending her here on DU.

25. You paint a compelling picture
My *only* point was that we must get out facts straight if we are to use them as weapons. I used tax records that became publicly available only this week. These are the numbers most Americans will see, if they see any at all, and they are clearly the only one's I knew - and I consider myself more than typically politically aware. You included assets (which is fair), but you then need to be aware of the language you use, lest somebody call you out on incorrect information (as I did). You also included government perks, which I think all of us on DU would agree that she abused.

The Republicans have proven time and again that WORDS MATTER. Consider McCain's refusal to admit that his "Obama supports comprehensive sex education for 5 year olds" ad is in any way over the line. It is "technically correct," he says (I disagree). And Republican have proven over and over that they *will* hang dems on technicalities, and Dems have proven themselves unwilling or unable to practice the same tactics.

You were technically incorrect, but I accept your intention and grant you the point. I will also thank you for the latest link and the correction, because I think it is important.

But I will say at the last that you were OUT OF LINE with your last comment. I neither attacked you, nor did I make any accusations against you. I pointed out factual inaccuracies in you statement; you returned a back-handed snarky suggestion I'm going out on a limb on Gov. Palin's behalf. Don't you dare suggest that I - or anybody else - could glean from your initial post what the Palins' net worth is. Given simply an earned income of 170K, mind you in Alaska, they certainly could be considered typical, if well above average (she *is* the governor, after all). It is the additions that you have only recently included that make your argument, not anything prior.

29. I apologize that I've offended you but in my defense your words carried ...
... an arguably chastising tone when you added: "That's more than me and my wife, but it's not crazy high." I didn't understand you were defending the accurate numbers, not the Palins although in relation to my post's objective, it sure seemed like it.

See it from my side. My goal was to unmask SP's "folksy", "average American, hockey-mom" charade so I took your comment as a rebuke. Your underestimation of the Palins' total income seemed to support that.

The average American does not make nearly close to that amount - most certainly not "Joe and Jane 6-pack". I know this because I know a LOT of Joe's and Janes thinking $50,000 a year is whopping.

However, we were both wrong, Jack.

I was wrong, by being almost $120,000 dollars too high because I mistook reading an article that was under Sarah Palin, not thinking the $250,000 dollar amount that was quoted before the release of her tax returns was the total income by the Governor and her husband as opposed to only the governor's salary. Then there was an article about Todd reporting he had an estimated income at $170,000 or a mention thereof. That might be pretty average in Alaska, but to the majority of average blue collar workers, it's a fortune.

You were wrong by underestimating the Palins' total combined income for 2007 at $166,080.

The amounts broken down in total income for the Palins in 2007 do not include assets. Just income although she didn't include the per diems in her tax return. The $1.2 million dollar amount includes their assets.

27. I forgot one thing
You're right. We both overlooked the OP's topic: Gov. Palin is Josephine Sixpack. Culturally, I think she is. You can give trash money; they're still trash. You can take away a good man's wealth; he is still a good man.

I, for one, am sick and tired of being called a water-carrier for the other side just because I argue for facts. For your part, you have given me a few of which I was unaware. And again, for that I thank you.

19. Another stat.
from the Alaska Legal Resource Center (http://touchngo.com/lglcntr/akstats/Statutes/Title39/Chapter20/Section010.htm):

AS 39.20.010. Annual Salary of Governor.

(a) The annual salary of the governor is $81,648.

(b) Effective July 1, 2001, the amount set out in (a) of this section is increased by two percent.

(c) Effective July 1, 2002, the amount set out in (a) of this section, as increased under (b) of this section, is increased by three percent.

Stateline.org (http://www.stateline.org/live/ViewPage.action?siteNodeId=136&languageId=1&contentId=14239) confirms this number for 2001.

As of May 2007, the same site posts the salary at $125K, just over the national average (http://www.stateline.org/live/details/story?contentId=207914). It is also 18K above what her 2007 tax records state. There's clearly some wiggle room, but nothing near $250K. Even Schwarzenegger only makes $207,000.

28. Fair is fair, you can't eat the scenery/ (Well, I suppose if you count
moose and caribou as scenery, then you could eat the scenery)

But, since

"the State of Alaska had a relatively high median household income of $60,338" .... and a poverty rate of 11.2%,

22. She must have put some money into hockey:
Sarah Palin made an impression on Michiganders while her son played midget major hockey in Kalamazoo.

Her oldest son, Track, lived in Portage, where he spent about six months of his senior year at Central High School in 2006 and 2007 while he played in a hockey development program.

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080830/NEWS01/808300385/1215/NEWS15

I'm pretty certain that if Track had been attending school in New York, he would have had to pay tuition to the public high school since his legal residence was not in the district. I wonder if he paid to attend school in Michigan?
