Write off Georgia. Hubby and I just took an around the state
trip, south of Atlanta through to north and the mountains and I didn't see one single Obama sign. NOT ONE. McCain/Palin signs everywhere. How seriously depressing. I saw one girl wearing an Obama tee shirt and she was getting hostile looks. (sigh)

This state is lost, trust me.

94. Utah is not a "fundy" state!
it is VERY religious, lots of sheep, the mormon church tells them how to vote and they do.

It used to be very democratic, in the 70s. Abortion is the issue that turned them red.

Not all religions are fundamentalist. The polygamists are fundamentalist. The VAST majority of mormons are not polygamist.

221. I don't put any stock in polls unless it is going to be a huge
landslide. Undecideds can always change an election and when you get right down to it, a lot of people don't always do what they say when they get in that voting booth.

Racism is prevalent in our country. I wish it weren't so, but it is. THAT is the one thing that worries me the most.

168. This is what you need to look at, Jean
We're registering new voters at an 8-1 ratio of Dems. to Republicans. My gym is registering voters. (L.A. Fitness). I came out of the Buford Hwy. Farmer's Mkt. today (heavy Asian-Hispanic area) and young people were registering voters.
My African American co-workers' churches are registering people and will make sure people get to the polls on election day.
Obama might not be actively "in" Georgia, but keep in mind: it's all about who shows up on election day.
Our organization is small here.
But we're tenacious.
(Plus, have you taken into account the critical demographic of younger people? No. They don't put up as many yard signs. They register on-line. They watch the debates on-lline. And they only use cell phones.
They're under your radar, now. But I bet they won't be on Nov. 4th.

173. My friends are registering 30-somethings and older who have never voted.
Obama supporters are incredibly passionate. The stakes this year are high, and people know it. Folks who have never voted in their lives are registering.

You're right. It's all about turnout. And even the racist fruity McSame supporters I know are lukewarm, at best, about voting for him. My guess is that they'll just be too tired to vote that day, or too busy, or something.

If Barr takes a huge chunk of the Repuke vote, Obama could win. Hell, even if Barr takes ALL the Repuke vote and wins the state for himself, it's an electoral advantage to Obama, because that's 15 electoral votes out of McCrazy's column.

109. So where were these signs located exactly?
Were they actually on people's front lawns, or were they in empty lots, on the side of the road, Clear channel owned billboards, etc?

Here in Washington state, I haven't seen a McCain sign yet, but even the other Repuke candidates, like that asshole attempted election thief Dino Soprano Rossi, most of the signs are not actually in anybody's yard. That means it's nothing but Repuke money astroturf, as opposed to actual popular support.

Not that I doubt a Repuke candidate, generically speaking, would do well in Georgia. But then Bob Barr is a native son of Georgia, and probably more aligned with how Georgia right wingers think. So I'm not ready to call Georgia for Gramps yet. Or for Obama, unfortunately.

152. Are you volunteering for the Obama campaign? May I remind you
that there are 5 million people in Atlanta metro. I think we should fight the good fight in Georgia and not concede ANYTHING to McCain.

If you think anecdotes are everything, I'll share mine:

I went to a sports bar to watch the McCain/Obama debate -- Democrats had organized to watch together. 250 Obama supporters showed up here in Johns Creek, GA, a very Republican area. You know how many McCain people showed up? 8.

Oh, and Chambliss is only 2 points ahead of Martin in the most recent poll.

Again, may I ask if you are volunteering -- because if you were, you wouldn't be putting negative posts up like this one. The only thing you have confirmed is that sparsely populated sections of GA that have been traditionally red have McCain signs displayed. All the quiet people? Well, you don't have a clue how they are going to vote.

159. McCain support here is very lukewarm.
Seriously, the ONLY people I know who are voting for him are Klan types -- people who routinely use the N-word at family gatherings and who hate EVERYONE other than Southern whites exactly like them. They blame Hispanics and Blacks for taking their jobs and their promotions. They hate Jews, Catholics, and Muslims.

But even these people aren't enthusiastic about McCain. They voted for Huckabee in droves. Their support for McCain is about as tepid as it would have been for Romney, who was three things they hate: a Yankee, a Mormon, and affluent-looking.

I have known these folks all my life. I know how they talk. I mostly know how they think. They will only vote for McCain because he's white. I'm not sure that's enough to get them out to vote on election day, either.

It was a fantastic shirt - Martin Luther King on one side, with the saying "I have a dream" and Obama on the right with "Yes we Can". I asked her where she got it but she said her sister got it for her and didn't know.

My yard sign in my neighborhood so far is the only Obama sign I've seen. I want to put a bumper sticker on but hubby won't let me because he's worried the car will get keyed.

115. I disagree.
I live in a formerly Republican district west/northwest of Atlanta, and this area was BLANKETED in W signs and stickers in 2000 and 2004. I would see ten or more on cars every day on I-20 and I-285. In two months of looking for stickers and signs, I have not seen ONE McCain yard sign and I have seen a grand total of five McCain stickers. I see three or four Obama stickers EVERY DAY without fail.

I have friends who are registering over a hundred new Democrats every month and have been doing it for months.

I'm saying right now that it'll be 50/40/10 Obama/McCain/Barr.

How long have you lived here? I've lived in Georgia all my life, and the last Dem who had this kind of support here was Jimmy Carter. Of COURSE there are still the racist low income types who vote completely against their own self-interest, even their survival. As long as Faux News and Rush Limbaugh are allowed to spew their filth unchecked, those people will still be hopelessly stuck in the cult.

But I'm telling you for a fact that the middle-of-the-road Georgia Republicans who have money and professional jobs are NOT voting Republican this year. If Romney or Giuliani had been on the ticket, they would have, but Palin is an absolute fucking JOKE to these people.

If that Good Old Boy is hurting in blood-red Georgia, then that's a good thing.

I'm happy to report that I voted for his Dem counterpart last weekend. My absentee ballot is on the way!!

But I'm telling you for a fact that the middle-of-the-road Georgia Republicans who have money and professional jobs are NOT voting Republican this year.

I haven't lived in Georgia in many years, but if the reports I've been hearing about Saxby and other Repubs is true, everyone writing off Georgia may get a bit of a surprise.

197. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
I remember back in 2002 when Saxby was blithering on election night that he'd just gotten a call from GWB and that he'd said, "I'm so happy to be workin' for YEWWWWW, Mr. President!!" And I'm thinking, "Hey, three branches of government? Anybody? Since when does Congress work for the executive branch?"

What happened here in 2002 was disgraceful. I will believe to my dying day that Diebold's last minute uncertified "patch" in metro Atlanta swung the election to Chambliss and Perdue.

154. Forsyth Co. office had some. If you volunteered you would
have a good chance of snagging a yard sign. A guy came in the other day and proudly declared himself a "Redneck for Obama".

You know, in 2006 I drove around rural Virginia right before the election. All I saw were George Allen signs. Gee, now who won that Senate race? Oh yeah, Jim Webb ... on the strength of Northern Virginia.

162. A friend of mine saw an interesting thing on I-75 the other day.
Rich white lady in a Mercedes driving down I-75 near Marietta, Forsyth County tag, great big ol' Obama sticker.

FORSYTH COUNTY, folks. One of the most racist counties -- formerly perhaps THE most -- in Georgia.

Georgia is most definitely in play. Middle class and upper middle class folks ain't happy with what Georgie has done to the country, and they are informed enough to know that McFuckingSame is going to put us in an even bigger world of hurt. We can't afford a two-front war as it is, and Iran will totally destroy what's left of our economy. These folks remember that they got much, much richer when Bill was in office, and they're ready for more of that.

Plus, Obama is a lot more like affluent white folks than McCain is. McCain is barely educated at all and hasn't worked in business EVER. The only money he has comes from his wife and whatever shady deals he's been able to put together as a senator. He makes NO fucking sense when he talks about the economy. Obama, on the other hand, is much more like the typical Republican businessperson type of voter. There's definitely something to be said for identity politics, and middle class professionals who may usually vote Republican just can't identify at all with McCain and Palin. I don't know a single professional woman who is anything other than horrified and PISSED AS HELL about Palin.

And yet you will never meet a more enthusiastic bunch of scrappy Obama volunteers than in this former KKK stronghold county. That is why this OP pisses me off so much. The person doesn't appear to volunteer and has NO IDEA of the kind of enthusiasm there is for Obama in the most unlikeliest places. Oh, and I don't have a yard sign nor will I. I do have a button and a T shirt though.

finally got two last week and they are up on a very busy street 1/2 block from Kell High.
Labor Day weekend we registered a lot of new voters in Cobb County.
In fact GA lead all 50 states in the Obama Campaign for registering voters that weekend.
On opening night of our local Obama Office it was standing room only with more than 100 people showing up to volunteer.

that by the paid Obama organizer who moved onto PA. GA is a LEAN McCain state according to most polls. However, our job at the least is to make the Republicans SWEAT by all of our organizing. Obama has more field offices than McCain, AND what field offices McCain has have come in LATE. Too late in my view. But it seems McCain feels now FORCED to defend Georgia, a state he would have preferred to just let coast to a win without any money spent in it. Coupling that new McCain field office in GA in a reliably deep red county with his leaving Michigan, I say Mission Accomplished.

181. Excellent point.
I went to a family reunion today, and more than half the regulars weren't there due to the gas shortage. Some areas in Georgia got a little better this week, but a lot still don't have gas. Our side of town was totally out last weekend.

Literally everyone I know here has cut back on driving except to work. They do errands and shopping on the way home, and only when absolutely necessary, at that.

There's not a lot of pleasure driving going on, for sure. Even if you have a full tank when you start out, you may not be able to find gas where you're going. And if you burn up all your gas fucking around, you may not be able to fill up enough to go to work.

237. We had no trouble finding gas. We passed several stations
that were out but pretty soon there would be one with gas. Not a bit of trouble. The station right next to our motel in Dahlonega was out of premium and mid grade the second night but the next morning had everything.

Not only that, this entire gas thing is a manufactured bunch of crap. My sis just went from Atlanta to Ohio driving and our Uncle told her to get off at the Speedway at Exit 25 in Corbin, KY they had the cheapest gas in the state.

Guess what? She had paid 4.19 for it here to top off her tank and it was $3.30 at that station and there was PLENTY of all grades!!

Almost a dollar difference. On the way back it was even cheaper. I think this entire thing is horsehockey.

15. Obama isn't spending money to distribute free yard signs
Yard signs don't win votes in national elections. When it's a state or local candidate with low name ID they are important. But for the presidency it's a waste of money in this day and age to distribute yard signs. It's amazing that it took until 2008 for a candidate to figure this out.

119. Exactly right.
Like I was saying in another part of the thread, we're in way, way different shape than in 2000 or 2004. I know many Republicans here who are voting Democratic for the first time in their lives. These guys have seen their stock portfolios take a nose dive, they're worried about pissing away billions in Iraq, they loathe McCain's health plan, and they think Palin is a total twat. If McCain had picked Romney or, better yet, if Romney had won the nomination, they would've voted Republican again this year, but now there's no chance.

The only Republicans I know who are still voting that way this year are lost causes. They'd vote for David Duke or Lyndon LaRouche if given the chance. Klan types, mostly. And I do know a few of them, unfortunately.

I've been working at the same place since 2000. It's a huge Atlanta office complex with thousands of people. In 2000 and 2004, I'd see a minimum of half a dozen W stickers every day. Out of all those thousands of cars, my car was the ONLY ONE with a Kerry-Edwards or Gore-Lieberman sticker.

Most people where I work make good money and have bought new cars since 2004. Not one of them has replaced their W stickers with one for McCain.

Edited to add: And this year, unlike 2000 or 2004, I routinely see five or more Obama stickers in the parking deck. :-)

32. That isn't a trustworthy indicator. I live in Ga. about 30 mil north of Atlanta
and 10 mi. south of Gainesville. I don't have a yard sign OR a bumpersticker on the car because people arund here are vindictive. Quite a few cars were keyed in 2004 because they bore Kerry stickers. Although my car is 10 years old, it still looks like NEW & only has 48,000 miles on it. We already voted for Obama absentee, but risking deliberate damage to my car is simply not worth the risk to me, just to advertise that I'm an Obama supporter. I've spoken to quite a number of others who feel the same!

I admit, I too would be really shocked if Obama managed to pull of a win in this State, but I'm not willing to say it CAN'T HAPPEN!

35. The people here who said that yard signs don't vote, or get
votes are right. I am in my local Obama office several times a week, almost every day, and people keep coming in wanting yard signs. We don't have any. We had a few, but the volunteers got them first and then we ran out. People come in and ask for a yard sign and we tell them we don't have any and then when we ask if they would volunteer, even an hour a week, they say they don't have time. We don't need anyone putting signs in their yards, we need people making phone calls and knocking on doors. A polite contact with an undecided voter can turn a vote for Obama. That is what we need from supporters.

some of us are working on the campaign here and the story is quite different than your drive led you to believe.

You could have posted asking if anyone knew what was going on with GA.

We had election fraud here last time. so who knows what will happen this year.

There is a lot of underground work going on by people who are taking days off to work on this campaign here.

45. Well - exactly the opposite in red Indiana.
I think the benefit of the long primary season - was a huge presence by both candidates throughout the state. There are tons of Obama signs and stickers - and I have seen one McCain sticker. Saw the first one...yesterday. On a car with Illinois plates.

There were always tons of Bush signage/stickers. Not this time around.

Heck Obama has been on the air here almost nonstop since April.

McCain has only just last week started pumping money into the state - why? B/c this reliably red state is looking very unreliable.

I know a number of 'conservative independents' who are not just avoiding Mccain - but intend to vote for Obama to try to set right the country in the bushwake, and (ironically) to "save the party."

So I'll see your Georgia, and raise you one Indiana.

108. Then why did you post this OP?
You said: "I doubt anyone would have carried Georgia under Dem"

So, that being the case, what is the point of the OP? I doubt Obama is going to carry my native Kansas: were there the slightest chance that he could do so, I can see posting an OP along those lines. Additionally, were there a point in time where Obama was actually ahead in Kansas, but had now fallen behind, I can similarly see posting an OP like yours.

But this business about posting the obvious - Obama is unlikely to carry Georgia - has nothing to do with either Obama or Georgia, and you well know it.

As another poster has already said, you need to seek help.

99. FLDem5...I hope you dont mind me using this...
I'm passing on some wisdom I read yesterday from a fellow DU'er, FLDem5,

"let them post signs. Don't go broke trying to buy them. They will only get stolen anyway.

Knock on doors. Make phone calls.

McCain = winner in yard sign election

Obama = winner of the November 4th election.

I'm good with that."

As I drove along the suburban streets outside of Cleveland...counting the McCain signs and hoping to see some Obama signs, your words rang in my ears...then...what's that (and how I WISH I had a camera to have this moment for all eternity...I may even go back and take pics today)

The street was suddenly lined, on both sides, with small, waving American flags that led up to at least six Obama/Biden signs...boom boom boom...right in a row...the American flags continued for, I'm sure, another mile...

I literally said "Nice!" out loud!

I'm proud to lose the yard sign election and prouder yet to win the November 4th! :patriot:

103. Don't worry about the yard signs or the landowners' vote.
I could say the same thing about Florida, where there's been massive distribution of yard signs on country roads in the last 30 days. Remember that the GOP can crank those things out and send them to Bush 2004 supporters in short order, and that most people don't have land along the highways (or land for that matter).

What would an Obama win in Georgia look like, besides narrow and irrelevent to the presidential election (it would be part of a 400+ vote blowout)? Simply, he'd still get blown away in North Georgia, and he'd lose most of the state, including the Atlanta suburbs (although that would depend on how many out-of-work bankers run with the Obama surge). He'd pull even in the coastal plain and pull out big numbers in Atlanta. The yard sign thing would still go way for McCain.

tons of Obama signs, and stickers, and I even saw a middle-aged fella wearing an Obama shirt draw this from a teen-aged girl on the sidewalk with her friends, who said:

(Sadly, that middle-aged man was NOT me.)

You'll see a lot of McCain signs, but it's nothing like what we had in 2004 with the fanatical Bushies driving around with their creepy "W" stickers.

Will Obama sneak in and win GA? Probably not. But he's making it way, way closer than it should be for a Democrat, and GA will not stay red forever.

I do not believe they are a good way to judge your state. While I do not expect Obama to win Georgia, I do not put it out of the range of possibility, given how McP has a way of shooting themselves in the feet at inopportune moments. That, plus Bar make it possible.

It may be depressing not to see Obama signs. But you don't always. Sometimes the signs you wish you saw are on a different road. In my area, particularly before the primaries, there were far more Ron Paul Signs than anything else. Depending on how busy the Paulites had been on any given night, sometimes they outnumbered the street signs. But he did not win, by any stretch.

He started buying some airtime there early on, along with MT and ND. I think there were a few others he was considering like LA.

But like all races go, eventually you have to prioritize your spending.

I don't know what the point of your thread is though. There are many people working hard in GA and elsewhere. They know, just as well as anyone else, that it's an uphill climb in the state but getting the popular vote win ALSO matters. I hope those volunteers don't pay attention to your post.

could challenge Florida and partly why Kerry could not challenge Ohio.

The second thing the popular vote does is build larger political capital to be spent. The more Obama wins by the more he can get his agenda through.

Or are you implying that a drive around some of the reddest bits of Georgia is more scientific?

192. I work at one of the reddest office complexes in Georgia.
And I have yet to see a single McCain sticker there, out of thousands and thousands of cars. In 2000 and 2004, there were W stickers everywhere. My car has always been the ONLY one with a Dem sticker -- until this year, that is. :-)

So my data-gathering method isn't all that scientific either, but if McCain had any level of support among middle-to-upper-middle class professional voters, I'd see at least ONE sticker in this place. Many of these folks will have something else to do on November 4th. And of the ones that do show up, I'm guessing a lot of them will be clicking the button for Obama.

132. How many Obama signs have been stolen in GA?
I've had 3 stolen from my yard in the past month. I re-ordered new ones 2 weeks ago.. and they still aren't here yet.

It doesn't seem to me that Obama is spending his time & effort on yard signs.. because he kind of knows that a 30 second ad is a lot more effective then a blue "Obama/Biden" sign in some guys front yard. And, he can actually afford to assault the airwaves with that.

The only way to get an Obama sign is to pay $8 plus shipping for it. I'm just saying.. signs are not the end all be all to a winning campaign or a losing campaign.

First of all, a lot of Obama supporters in red areas are very, very shy to show their allegiance. Second of all, the Obama campaign is far more organized here. Third of all, this state has been shaken by gas shortages and the fall of Wachovia Bank causing more "shy" people to consider the Democrat.

I would call GA a lean McCain state and will most likely state in the red column; but your dead certainty that it's in the bag for McCain shows you are not doing a lot of grassroots work. Unlike previous presidential elections, this state will not be called at 7:01 PM EST.

Would never move there.

From Wikipedia: "In the 1960s, during the Vietnam War, Chambliss was given five student deferments and he received a medical deferment (1-Y) for bad knees due to a football injury."

I will drive through the state, but that's it.

188. actually, that was a result of election fraud, as spoonamore proved
that was the year the SOS aide turned in the 2 diebold machines in Dem areas with patches on them that had been put on after they had been approved.

It's tough to know what way this state leans; since 2006 the exit polls were exactly reversed from the "votes" and Spoonamore determined that a vote switching device had been used in heavily dem areas.

go figure.

201. And that's why OPs like this need to be roundly debunked.
There's a considerable psy-op underway in posts here and with those bullshit Insider Advantage polls to make it look like Obama can't win Georgia. Most of us who've lived here any length of time know better.

If all of us good little Democrats buy into the meme that Obama can't win, then we won't feel like we have grounds for raising hell when the election is stolen. Again. That's why it's dangerous to allow disinformation like this to stand unchallenged.

I believe Obama can and WILL win Georgia unless the same Diebold fraud switches votes again.

I'm from Texas, I understand how you feel. We drove from Texas to Disney World this summer and I was looking for bumper stickers, signs, anything to try to guage how people are leaning. As I was reading through some of the posts (the nice ones) I thought also that people who live in apartments don't have yards for signs. And a lot of young people live in apartments.

Why are some of y'all out there so mean? Jean's just asking, looking for some reassurance, some civil conversation.

187. i'm pretty sure that's not the best gauge...
But despite that I don't think GA was ever in play. I suspect he will do better than Kerry, and that will help down-ballot races too. Jim Martin is getting pretty close to Saxby Chambliss despite a fraction of campaign funds. Lots of Obama stickers in Atlanta in-town. I never saw this many for Kerry. All of the McCain/Palin signs probably means they're worried, I also don't remember this many Bush/Cheney signs 4 years ago but could be wrong.

Obama will take Atlanta proper and other chunks of the state but I will be pleasantly surprised if he wins the state. Clinton won the state when Perot was in the mix.

I do believe I have the only vehicle in the county with an Obama sticker on it. Since putting it on the car, the neighbors on both sides of me have completely stopped talking to me. I was called a "commie" at in the Wal Mart parking lot and a man behind me at the gas station last week asked me if I was "a fag or a n----r lover". So much for southern hospitality.

I'm seeing a lot of "Sarah!" stickers - since when to VP candidates get bumper stickers?

194. You'd be surprised.
Yes, there are still plenty of racists here. Heaven knows I'm related to a bunch of them. But they are increasingly outnumbered by young people, middle class professionals, and people of all ages and walks of life who GET IT. I know conservative, white senior citizens who are diehard Obama fans. I know middle and upper middle class professionals who are voting Democratic for the first time ever. I know people who have never voted in their lives who took time off unpaid to go register this year.

Even the hardcore racists are lukewarm, at best, about McCain. A lot of them just won't take the time to vote. Sure, they hate Obama and everything he stands for, but they don't love McCain ENOUGH to take time out of their day to go vote.

I have never, ever seen this level of support for a Democratic candidate in this state.

But I guess the intellectually lazy enjoy an anti-South diatribe to show their superiority. I come from the North, but I can tell you that my Atlanta suburban neighborhood is more diverse racially than any comparable neighborhood in Conn. We have a lot of assimilation and mutual understanding going on here, in addition to pockets of white racist hate. I think that exists in EVERY state, by the way.

Democrats stood bold and spoke up. Just place web cam security on any sign and folks can check their signs even at work. The 7 point gap says to me Georgia gets it in their heart of hearts I'm guessing the gap is usually further apart. It's important at the very least to say if campaigning out there that if they can't bring themselves to vote Obama then at least don't reward Repubs for breaking the country and vote for the local hero Bob Barr.
