8. Oh, come on. They had repugs discussing EVERY SENTENCE OF
the dem speeches during the DNC. They let the repugs speak longer than the dem speeches. It was embarrassing. All the time that Kerry/Edwards talked would not amount to the same length that the repugs got during the DNC.

32. Excuse me?
Are you insinuating something? I've worked in every Democratic campaign since Franklin Roosevelt in 1944. Are my posts maybe a little less bombastic than some others here? You may be right. Different generations and different approaches maybe. However, I have the right to express my approach without my credentials as a Democrat being questioned by someone hiding behind a letter and a number. I'll put my work for the party up against yours any day, my friend. The parties are polarizing into two extremes, and your questioning me with that comment of yours was uncalled for. You will find nothing in any post I have made that is not consistent with the long held values and traditions of our party. Apologies all around if I am a little cranky tonight.

47. With Respect....
I agree with you that the perception of Kerry giving his speech immediately after Bush's* will be rife with derision. However, it is and has been quite apparent that this country has been abused in terms of civility for years.
What to you seems inappropriate will seem like a 'well timed' rebuttal to many younger Americans. (Mostly democrats and hopefully undecideds.)
I respect the balanced view you take as I often take on such myself, but I believe Kerry has had the right what with the sheer lambasting he has endured.

No way are the Repubs playing by the "rules" in this election; they are lying every time they speak and on Nov. 2 they are going to try to steal it.

Kerry did exactly the right thing by coming out hard tonight. The real race starts Tuesday, when people (other than us crazies) start paying attention. Kerry's getting revved up. I love it.

27. I saw nothing wrong with it
With all the sleazy Rovian shit that's been flung around, I see the rules as out the window.

This rally has been planned all week, and after four days of attacks by the GOP, Kerry had a right to get up and call 'em out.

Kudos to the news networks, since I really didn't expect them to carry too much of the speech. And they didn't have to. They gave the Dems the whole night following their speech. But they carried at least most of it, and that's cool. Kind of sets up the debates.

I thought the midnight rally was an excellent idea, and no, it was not petty and desperate. The GOP's hatefest this week looked desperate. After seeing Kerry tonight, he looked far from desperate.

33. unprecedented? yes.
The Republican National Convention in 2004 was unprecedented in its smears against the Democratic nominee. Personal, vulgar, untruthful smears.

If Kerry hasn't immediately addressed the lies and ugliness of the last four days, he'd be perceived as weak. The Republicans brought this upon themselves.

I don't completely disagree with your "thunder stealing" premise.
I might have made the same decision to cut-off Kerry's speech if I were the producer at MSNBC.

But I totally disagree it looked petty, or "looked awful" It's about damn time the Democrats acted fast to thwart the Republican attacks. Tough shit for Karl Rove that he didn't think to do something like this right after the DNC.
Where are these "campaign etiquete rules" written that you seem to want the Democrats to adhere to? This is not your daddy's presidential campaign. It's about smear, it's about negativity, it's about distortion. I give Kerry credit for so far standing up and attempting to keep the argument about policy. But I will not condemn him for finally taking a page out of the Republican playbook and shaping the arguments, using the media to his advantage, and taking some of the spotlight away from the Republicans. It was a smart move.

I hope you watched the speech at least (CSPAN didn't cut away). A good Democrat would have.

42. I have no idea if you're a "good" Democrat
but you seem to be a little TOO willing to cede the point to the Republicans. Fine, you think it was justified to pull the plug after 10 minutes. Fine, you think Bush deserves the coverage.

But you think Kerry "petty" for his speech? I don't buy that.

You think Kerry's tyrying tosteal the spotlight? Damn straight! Good for him, the Republicans have used their influence to steal an election.

You were embarrassed? I don't buy that either. All the shit Kerry has been handed in this election doesn't enrage you? If it does, you suddenly drop that rage and become embarrassed? Unbelievable.

And then you say Kerry looked weak and desparate? - now I know you're bullshitting us. Kerry stood up to the lies and smears and fought back. If that makes you feel embarrassed, if that makes you cringe, and if that makes you feel awful, then I suggest you stay outr of politics and find a milder hobby.

DU is much to passionate for your blood, regardless of how good of a Democrat you may, or may not, be.

43. OK bear with me bacuse I do understand the point you made
But IMMEDIATELY following Kerry's acceptance speech there were LOADS of GOP pundits on the air ripping him. IMMEDIATELY following. NOT the case with Bush. We saw Rudy on one channel, Patacki on another, and Ralph Reed on another.

I understand you think decorum is good...but please tell me when you saw the patriotism of a candidate questioned...when did you hear a candidate described as a socialist (barring Debs), when did you seea person awarded a Purple Heart mocked with a bandaid on the floor of a convention.

I think Kerry did the right thing to respond immediately. The only reason it MAY be perceived as petty is that it SHOULD have been done last night except last night Kerry still played along with the decorum you appreciate...

Kerry's speech was NEWS. They could've spent 10 more minutes to cover it all, then go back to the bush-rimming.

This is indicative of the major problem with the cable news networks - they believe their opinions on the news are more important than the news itself.

You are a pundit, so I can understand why you might think that should be acceptable.

46. I didn't say it should be the main story
I said the news networks should cover it. It would've taken an extra 10 minutes, hardly an onerous burden on them.

It was news. They should cover the news.

In fact, the whole "culture of opinion" that has sprung up is the result of a failure to spend the time and money to actually COVER the news. I remember when CNN actually covered news around the clock.

They discovered it's cheaper to hire talking heads to sit around and yak about the news than to actually go out and uncover the news and bring it to us.

When was the last time a CNN "reporter" ever broke a real story? It simply doesn't happen anymore.

Bush's speech was news until it was over. Then it was Kerry's time, and Kerry's speech was no less news. It *was* news. Period. By the time Kerry started speaking, Bush's speech was no longer "news" by definition. It was "old news" by then. Kerry's speech should never have been cut off by CNN and MSNBC. That's just yellow journalism and there's no excuse for it.

I've never seen a bigger media whore than Chris Matthews.

Sometimes you're amazed that he's making such good insights (like on Real Time with Bil Maher) or when he's ripping apart ass holes like Malkin and telling Ingram to shut up...and of course who can forget the Zell thing?

Then Tweety goes out of his way to show that he actually "likes" the president a lot. At this point I doubt Matthews even agrees with his policies (he didn't agree with the war) but he knows when to play a good little soldier for GE.
