Two disruptors during Bush speech last night
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0903-02.htm

Just more than 40 minutes into Bush's speech of longer than an hour, Brashares jumped on the chair, yelling "Bush lies," and holding up her homemade banner.

Within seconds, she was overcome by half a dozen burly security men who wrestled her into the crowd as the crowd, sensing a disturbance, yelled "four more years" to drown her out. She sent me sprawling into KCBS radio reporter Doug Sovern. They hustled her out in a matter of moments.

The president paused, briefly looked confused by the cheering during a serious moment of his speech, then continued.

Later, another Code Pink activist, Jodie Evans, 49, of Los Angeles, stood up in a seat under the Fox News skybox and pulled off her dress, exposing her pink lingerie with a hand-written message: "Fire Bush - Women say bring the troops home now."

1. Don't they understand that they just look like lunatics when they do this?
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 10:03 AM by FatSlob
Most of the country looks at these folks like they are nutjobs. Outlandish protesting is, I feel, couterproductive.

8. thanks
anyone watching the speech Last night, didn't know about the protesters - they just observed awkward pauses by the chimp, and awkward chants (at inapropriate times).

30. Actually, you knew about them if you were watching Faux
I was surfing and happened to be on Faux when one of the protesters stood up. Brit Hume jumped in to explain that a protester was displaying a sign that read, "Bush lied, people died," and they even showed her being hustled out of the arena.

26. It takes all kinds, really
The movement against the Vietnam war didn't start in the political parties, or in the government-- it started in the streets.

The power in the streets eventually reached critical mass, and the politicians had to start listening to what the people had been saying all along: the war is wrong, and we need to end it NOW.

Unfortunately, we still haven't reached the critical mass yet. Kerry/Edwards have made no promises to end the war-- only that they hope to have a smaller occupying force in four years from now. They NEED the voices of us who oppose the war to give them the COURAGE to end this war as soon as possible-- NOT in four years, or ten years, but NOW.

Those of us in the streets need to keep fighting, and bringing attention to the atrocities. Those in the parties need to put pressure on their representatives and candidates. Those in the governments(s) need to keep on carrying the message forward all the way up, and demand that we end the war.

With the help of EVERYONE at all levels, we'll win one day.

Angry women with a message to get past Bush and his handlers.

I applaud them. Uppity broads are going to win this election for us.

33. I agree to a certain extent, but
as a co-worker pointed out to me, protests like this push the bar up a bit which makes it slightly easier for others to take more minor actions. Maybe a few dozen people feel just a bit more at ease wearing an anti-Bush button because at least it isn't disrupting a convention speech. Someone may feel more comfortable saying something opposed to Bush, because at least he isn't shouting on national television.

Protest and dissent should be honored in this country. Even if we totally disagree with the reasoning of the protest, we must honor the right to do so and applaud those willing to take a stand.

35. Anyone remember the Sons of Liberty?
Those were the guys who dressed up like Indians, stormed aboard a boat in Boston Harbor (criminal trespass) and dumped a load of tea over the side (destruction of private property).

We call them Patriots. What do you suppose the British called them?

Desperate times call for desperate measures. You can say that they look like nutjobs but they bring much needed attention to some very important issues. People wonder why someone would get so upset about something that they'd risk their freedom for it.

2. Thanks for the post.
I waded through some CNN/Fox last night only to learn there was no mention of these women. NBC showed Brasheres being dragged out, but no comments were made after.

Apparently, these women were just crazies (more so than bush and his followers) who didn't deserve any coverage.

I don't know about you, but I like my wimmin outspoken, opinionated and NOT AFRAID of speaking the truth to power. I'm very impressed that these two made it into the convention hall without getting caught. More power to them!

24. Yeah, they remind me of my wife, actually :)
She's the same way: VERY outspoken, raised on a farm, former rape/sexual assault counsellor, very funny, beautiful, and not afraid to get in somebody's face if they're talking sh!t. She helped me all along the way this primary season to the state convention (working for DK, of course!) and is helping me/us in our ongoing efforts this fall.

But I still can't figure out why the heck she'd marry a shlub like me :D

7. Props to the protestors
They rock! One question: How come the party that claims to be the only one capable of keeping me safe from terrorists is incapable of keeping protestors off their own convention floor? Hmmmm?

Was it just me, or did the roar and excitement of the crowd as they were hauled off remind you of the Roman coliseum?

This was the second most enjoyable moment in the convention for me. The first was when I saw Michael Moore. Their presence and strength was very encouraging. It got me out of the hypnotic stupor of this convention.

12.  I deeply appreciate what they did.
Given the phalanx of lies and distortions from the GOP, and considering how little its positions square with more than half of the voters, demomstrations like this
are going to happen.

They better get used to it.

22. Good work, Ladies
Fight, I say.

This is war and we can't afford not to take on the Republicans EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

I don't give a fuck that this doesn't "change any minds."

Pratically all of our minds are made up anyways.

The most important aspect of these disruptions is that it demonstrates that it's possible to resist against Republican crap.

23. Outlandish protests
Most of the country looks at these folks like they are nutjobs. Outlandish protesting is, I feel, couterproductive.

I imagine many Colonists said the same thing about the Boston Tea Party action.

I normally wouldn't condone disruptive protests inside an organization's own domain. But the evidence is solid that the current administration employs serial liars and criminals who are harming our nation, and so I think a more serious and disruptive response is valid.

27. These are two VERY brave women
And it wamted my heart to know that they gave Bush pause for a few seconds and caused the cameras to go off Bush, spoliing his momentum.

For a few seconds during and after each outburst, Bush muight as well have been speaking in tongues for all it was worth.

Their protests told the world that we're not going to let him carry on with business as usual. Their protests said to all of us that you can stand up to these neo-nazis and fight back.

To the protestors: Thank you for doing such a great job! I, for one, truly appreciate what you did for us all last night.
