Bush's Speech was Good
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 10:43 AM by Jack_Dawson
Unfortunately. Kudos to his speechwriter for making him sound like someone who gives a crap about regular folks. I'm smart enough to discern truth from reality, but I'll bet America isn't. Apologies if this has been covered a thousand times but I wasn't near a computer last night.

1. Bullshit! He said the words but didn't sell the words.
Anybody with a brain could see he was lying.

3. Don't confuse "lying" with "good speech"
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 10:51 AM by Jack_Dawson
Believe me, nobody wanted him to fuck up worse than I did. Nobody wanted his teleprompters to become hacked into as much as I did. But the Chimp did what he needed to do. America is by and large, stupid. And those are his constituents. If you don't believe me, wander over to Free Republic and see firsthand how they massacre the English language. Plus Bush supporters are just not as nuanced in their thinking as you and I are.

Everyone with a brain knows he's lying. "Clean Air Act", "No Child Left Behind" all ironic opposites. But like I said, America is stupid.

15. More importantly, don't confuse
"didn't stomp on his tongue or fall down the stairs" with good speech. He said all the words in sequence. The content was empty, the facts distorted, the platitudes plentiful.

2. I thought his last press conference was good and agreed with a lot of it.
This is because he lies like shit all the time and tries to sound halfway like a liberal. It doesn't matter what he does because people figure he wouldn't bold-face lie about something in front of everyone, but if it fools enough people he'll get elected anyways.

5. Reminds you of Hitler and the Big Lie theory.
People, in their own lives, are afraid of being caught in a small lie, and would never in their wildest imagination attempt a big lie, so when a politician tells a big lie they are more likely to accept it is true, since they can't fathom themselves being able to do such a thing.

Bush Lie - Saddam would not comply, bullshit inspectors were in, Saddam was turning over thousands of pages of paper work - That was an out-right lie to attack fast, because they knew no weapons would be found.

Where's the truth Mr. Dawson? Please discern!

I'm not disputing that. I'm saying for Joe Six-Pack Dumbass Swing State Voter it was probably an effective speech. As long as Kerry remains on his heels it doesn't look good.

11. There is a difference...
It was a pretty good speach. The content doesn't matter in the long run because they have never told the truth. It played well with people who already support him but I don't know how it played with "idependents" I like what Kerry said later at his speech....
Paraphrazing they have had four years to solve some of the problems Bush addressed, now bush is running to you with solutions 2 months before the vote?

12. It didn't out-and-out suck, but . . .
1. It was too damn long.

2. There was very little new content - tax cuts, "soft bigotry of low expectations, medical savings accounts, tort reform - this is the same old shit we've been hearing from these guys for years.

There was a little packet of fresh red meat tossed to the fundies, since Bush did devote about three minutes to abortion, "defending marriage" and the wonders of religious charities - but again, nothing new.

3. Terror, terror, terror, terror, terror. Again, the same old shit we've been hearing for three years now.

4. In terms of delivery, there a few moments towards the end that were smarmily effective for Shrub fans. However, the first half and beyond was stiff and O-V-E-R-E-N-U-N-C-I-A-T-E-D and just plain clumsy.

He flawlessly delivered pretty talk to smooth over an imperialistic crusade on behalf of the Almighty.

16. Very boring for the first 3/4
You'd think that "stiff" Kerry would drone on for over an hour and sound like an intolerable policy wonk and Bush the "likeable" would keep it fiery and passionate for 50 minutes. It was the other way around.

It was pretty stupid for Bush to mention tax cuts as every solution to every problem, while trying to promote funding for community colleges and schools.

20. A lot of folks here are missing Jack's point

In terms of what * needed to do, it was a VERY good speech. He tugged on America's heartstrings, and, being the disingenuous bastard that he is, didn't care one wit about doing so. He politicized 9-11 for everything it was worth, just like we all knew he would.

As for nuances, remember the American public does not sit here all day, as we do, ferreting out the ever-ascending pile of bullshit the is the mis-administration. Instead, it looks for sound bites, and feel-good moments, and Ronnie-isms.

They got 'em last night - in spades.

Anyone who doesn't think so is whistling past the graveyard.

Simple thoughts for simple minds.

If JK can learn to use it, all is well, because he can skewer the simpleton with sound bites.

Sorry, but in this day and age, that is what works.

26. He's trying to pull a Clinton-esque "likeable guy" approach,
Unfortunately, Bush's "likeable guy" will work with some boneheads because, face it, sometimes Kerry comes across with the personality of a dead fish.

My friend refuses to vote this year because Bush is "too dumb to be President", although she wouldn't mind having him as a neighbor, and Kerry is physically ugly and "I just don't like him--I don't know why."

for exactly the reason of personable. clinton got re elected though cause economy was good and repugs behavior to him. but especially because the economy was good. dont miss with peoples money

bush doesnt have that going for him, a comfort in the economy so that isnt going to be good enough for people, like it was for clinton. they can say to themselves, hey he is a nice enough guy, like the guy, but need a new dude, and shrug the loyalty thing off

again dont miss with peoples money

22. I only watched bits and pieces
I kept going back to it like a person mesmerized by a fresh corpse. It was a smooth speech that seemed to give his fans what they wanted but I do question what the undecided voter would make of it. From what I saw, he didn't really offer any concrete answers to anything. "We will create jobs by stimulating investing" - wtf does that mean? That's the sort of thing I heard - vague on details.

People who are already behind him were going to vote for him anyway but I don't think there was enough substance in there for a lot of the undecideds. Unlike Kerry, who offered some details, I didn't see too many. And since he's had four years already to iron out most of these problems and they've only gotten worse, he doesn't have a lot of credibility to someone who's lost their job and is worried about health care. Just my opinion and like I said, I didn't see it all.

24. The speech didn't over extend him
I don't see how it could have created new supporters though. Those who aren't supporting him now are looking for concrete answers which he didn't supply. He rejustified the Iraq War but didn't describe how he was going to get our troops home. He told us the economy is getting better, but just handed out more tax cut crap as a plan to recovery. He addressed health care but aside from saying he was going to make sure every county had a health center (without mentioning how he was going to pay for it) it was all pretty meaningless.

He kept saying he was going to reinvent government for the future, but there weren't any grand plans. Where was mention of research and development into disease? Plans to better respond to terrorist threats in the future and all of that kind of stuff were left off the table - as was the name Osama Bin Laden.

A good speech but I think it missed the mark. It goes over well with the converted and that is about it.

23. Disagree.......
For a presidental speech, his speech was terrible, but did what it was intended. Sadly, the reception his speech is receiving says more about the intellect of the American people than it does Bush. Bush and his people have learned how to speak to the American people in ways that are terrible.

It is already leaking out that Bush's people see him as a father figure talking to a child.

I simply cannot believe how the "pundits" reacted to this show. If any of them read the news, reported or editorialized like the way Bush speaks, he or she would be joining the ranks of the unemployed.

Not only that, the content of the speech was something that needs in depth scrutiny. But I doubt that will come.

35. I dont see what good
rural health clinics are going to do when there isn't anyone to work in them. The hospitals are so severely understaffed as it is that I can't understand his (empty) promise to ensure healthcare for everyone (even in those hard to reach areas which will apparently be highlighted on some sort of map?)

I am originally from Illinois but I moved to Atlanta four years ago. The village I lived in, yes it's a real village of 500 people, had absolutely no health clinic of any kind and the closest hospital was in such bad shape you didn't want to go there so you chose to drive the 30 miles to the city for care. The health department was in yet another town and since there wasn't public transportation it was nearly impossible to get to.

Then, Bush fell into office and more programs were cut. The budget for the WIC program was cut. WIC stands for Women Infants and Children. It supplies milk, formula, juice, peanut butter, cheese, and a few other food items to families who need just a little extra help getting along. It also ensures that children are getting the proper nutrition. But because Bush felt these program budgets needed sliced and diced there is a higher population of lower middle class not being able to receive healthcare.

What is he going to do to fix that situation? Is he going to personally taxi people from town to town so they can get what little healthcare they can? Is he going to put back the money he took from the social programs? I didn't hear his Great Plan to undo what he has done. Did I miss something?

36. That's exactly it!
He wasn't really smirking last night, but when I look at him, I still see the smirkiness within.

You can see it all over his face, he knows his words are BS and he can't believe his good fortune that people are so stupid as to believe him. He's like the cat that swallowed the canary.

I am just amazed how much weight the voting public puts on a speech. I understand why you may have to do that with a politician you don't know, but if you want to know what Bush stands for, and what he's going to do if he gets re-elected, LOOK AT HIS RECORD. (It sucks, by the way.)

WTF does a speech written by Karen Hughes have to do with what Bush will do the next 4 years? NOTHING.
