CHARLESTON, W.Va. - More than 150 union members and supporters gathered in front of the United Mine Workers headquarters on Kanawha Boulevard Sunday afternoon to support Barack Obama for president.
Opening the rally, Kenny Perdue, president of the West Virginia AFL-CIO, said, "You ought to be mad as hell.
"What are we leaving for our kids and our grandchildren? Thanks to George Bush, not a damn thing.
"He has brought the country to a pre-Depression mode. And we are in deep trouble around the world. We're going to have to work a lot longer to make it to retirement."
Perdue criticized John McCain's plans to privatize Social Security and tax health care for most working people.
"McCain is a mirror image of George Bush. If you want to leave something for your kids and grandkids, there is only one person you can vote for in this election."
Pat Maroney, a Charleston lawyer who represents labor organizations, criticized rising deficits.
"If you want to build roads in Iraq, vote for John McCain. If you want to build roads in West Virginia, vote for Barack Obama," Maroney said.
"If you want to build hospitals and schools in Iraq, vote for John McCain. But if you want to build them here, vote for Barack Obama," he said.
