14. Right. And voting for Dean is like voting for the NRA. </sarcasm>
Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 12:06 PM by Bucky
Clark has done a lot of what he's proposed already. As base commander at virtually every post he's held over the last 20 years he's worked on a range of quality of life issues. Army bases are small to medium sized communities and Clark has had scads of experience overseeing employment, housing, healthcare, security, and transportation infrastructure arrangements for commands as small as battallions and as big as the entire NATO force command.

On top of that he's had a lot of experience in exective/head of state level diplomatic negotiations, including patching together a working coalition to develop policy and procedures for Nato's only war. Despite serious hamstringing from everyone from France to Trent Lott, he got the job done.

I'm not gonna bash Dean because I know I'll have to work with Dean supporters no matter how the nomination turns out. But let's compare Clark to, say, Abraham Lincoln. When Abe was elected president he had no experience doing the things he championed. He only had policy proposals and the will power to carry out his agenda. Not having been elected to anything is far from being a disqualifier for the job. I heard the same lame complaints against Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988--never been on a ballot before. I didn't buy it then, I don't buy it now.

64. This responds to charge "Voting Clark is like voting for Club for Growth"
Hawkeye X above said that, but didn't back it up. Apparently someone found some one-remove link from one of Clark's former co-workers to the conservative Club for Growth group. It's a bizarre stretch to say that means that Clark is carrying water for them--it's a lie to say he's their Manchurian candidate or would do their bidding if elected.

My analogy was that this is the same quality of smear as if someone said voting for Dean is like voting for the NRA. Dean may have a few distant ties to the NRA, but they would hardly set the agendas for his presidency.

My point is that Clark = Club for Growth is as lame a charge as Dean = NRA. No thinking person could believe otherwise.

18. You know I used to support Kerry very early on in the race
I liked that he was a vet and he was the only one at the time attacking the Bush admin ("We need a regime change in Washington"), then came Dean, but damn, even if Dean (or Clark) weren't in the race I wouldn't support Kerry now. He just damn imploded. Now that has a lot to do with Dean (and to a lesser extent Clark), but I think I'd still support Gephardt over him had that been the case. At least he takes some somewhat brave positions about things on repealing the tax cuts, NAFTA, and universal healthcare.

19. Ahh, I see this poll has taken the usual "trend".
Dean gets an early and conclusive lead.

Then, presumably as the word spreads that a poll is up,
Clark pulls ahead.

Curious, isn't it? It always seems to go this way.

Clark supporters aren't always lurking handy to take a poll. You have to go remind them. Please don't tell me this doesn't happen on other campaign blogs, for instance. I can't recall how many 'go vote' posts I've seen at BFA. It's just normal online supporter stuff. Pretty inconsequential.

Dean supporters claimed the same thing and I googled and found an example on a Dean blog. At that time, I think the problem was non-DU members signing up just to vote, which was a real problem. I don't call alerting DU members to a vote carried out on DU a real problem or "freeping," and I don't believe you would, either. Clearly I was snared in some kind of set-up, not the first time.

37. Freep?
Since when is telling other Clark voters that there is a vote available "freeping"?

What, you think only Dean supporters should be allowed to tell other Dean supporters that there's a vote?

You asked why we support Clark when he hasn't proven anything. It is, in part, because of what Dean has proven--that he will flipflop on any issue and pander to anyone in order to get more votes.

Clark has proven that he's consistent, true to his word, and a man of integrity.

And I can't wait to meet he and his wife on Friday! If Clark doesn't win for some reason, I can at least tell everyone I met the man who SHOULD have been president.

42. Recent?
I don't know about other Clark people but I've been saying it for months, and I know the site "Waffle Powered Howard" has been in existence since before Clark entered the race.

Also, interestingly, my son's Social Studies teacher was teaching them about the election yesterday and made a comment that "Whatever the people in Iowa want to hear is what will come out of Howard Dean's mouth..."

Not to mention, it appears that Dean's own internal polling shows people in NH think he's "indecisive."

So I wouldn't blame any "Clark" talking points for this one. I'd say it has more to do with the fact that Dean is constantly renouncing his previous positions on everything and constantly being caught contradicting himself, such as on the war.

I don't need the Clark campaign to tell me what to think. I'm pretty good at reading the newspapers myself and reaching my own conclusions.

The tide is turning...as Gallup pointed out the other day, the majority of candidates leading in January did not go on to win the nomination.

63. I had to be loyal to Edwards, but I now doubt he will make it.
It's still possible, but he doesn't have much time left. His only chance is, if he is The Anointed One (of the DNC/DLC), in which case he will suddenly and amazingly catch on. And we will all go, "Holy s----, what happened???"

Otherwise, I will be happy with Clark or Dean as well. Or some combination.

66. And, Clark scoooores yet again!
He's running for president, and he is not used to losing.  And if he gets the nomination, he'll go up and down this country and beat on President Bush like a drum.  He'll do 2,000 yards every morning; he'll rappel down any cliff he needs to; he will shake off any small-arms fire as if it were a swarm of gnats.  And he'll get better at the game each and every day.
He hates to lose.  And he doesn't run from fights.
And even if he's never played the game, he's never a beginner at anything.
Dismissed."
