I'll never forget the immediate reaction of my Uncle Bernie when he heard the news on Dec. 7, 1941. Filled with patriotism, this gentle man rushed to enlist in the armed forces. When he came home, after four years as a medic, he was a changed man. My grandmother and mother cried, fearful he had lost his mind, as he cursed while throwing his uniforms into our coal furnace.
He never spoke of what he had seen in the war until recently, at the age of 94. Sixty years later, I could finally understand his rage at the suffering he witnessed and his lifelong contempt for war.
Another more famous young man did much the same thing in a different war. Filled with patriotism, he volunteered to serve on a very dangerous assignment. As with my uncle, what he saw and heard changed his view of the war and, when he returned, he had the courage to speak the truth.
My uncle will vote for John Kerry on Nov. 2.
