you are a liberal if...
...you believe that all people are of equal value.

I'm looking for about 10 or 20 phrases that describe the liberal worldview. I thought I'd print them out and lay them around town. I can't tell you how many times someone has said to me, "I don't know what I am" and I think there are a LOT of people out there who don't really know who they are. People always want to be the good guys though, so I'm hoping some unclaimed souls might stumble across the list and decide that they must be a liberal cause it's nice guy stuff and they see themselves as a nice guy.

I know this probably sounds pretty simplistic, but I think people who are still undecided at this point probably don't pay a lot of attention to politics. Maybe simple is the best approach.

Anyway..I'm looking for phrase suggestions! Any help would be appreciated.

13. Thanks ...
Thanks for the greeting. I've been reading the articles on DU for a long time, but finally was like, "Hey ... forums ...." I'm dense like that sometimes. :)

I've been wanting to clarify what I think being a liberal means, at least to me, for a long time, so this topic is a great help. Thanks for starting it!

5. but all people aren't of equal value..
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 10:44 PM by leftyandproud
I would say the firefighters of 9-11 were worth far more to the world than the terrorists...Losing them was a much bigger loss to humanity.

No, everyone is not equal.

nice thought...but you need to scratch that one.

15. hmmm...
You raise an interesting point, but it gets tricky because I don't think we have the right to make those kinds of value judgements. In your example you're talking about groups of people in specific circumstances. I don't want to disrespect the firefighters at all, but it's quite probable that there were some in the group who I probably wouldn't have admired at all(pre-9/11) if I had known them individually. I think that all people and all groups have positive and negative attributes, and circumstances, environments and personality traits all come together to create who we become.

I don't know. There is something to your argument, but I keep getting an image of a row of newborn babies, and I try to imagine picking out the one that has 'less value'. I can't seem to find a way to do it.

12. You are a lib if you believe that sensitivity is a strength.
Damn, I used to have a list I made. And I'm braindead, so I don't remember.
You are a lib if-
you treat people the way you would like to be treated.
you avoid war at all costs.

19. you believe "one for all and all for one," we are a community,
we are all in this together and we help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

As opposed to what I call the republican (or conservative) view, which is "every man for himself" or "I've got mine; fuck you."
