Clinton in Cabinet Would Likely Please Base
11/15/08

If President-elect Barack Obama finds a place for Hillary Clinton in his Cabinet, it would likely resonate well with Democrats, 80% of whom have a favorable opinion of her.

1. Obama has to pick people based on wether they will be the best person for the position not the what
the "base" thinks

If Obama feels Hillary will be a good fit in his cabinet, I ma sure it has nothing to do with pleasing the base

Personal I think with Hillary being the fighter she is, she would serve us better remaining in the Senater

30. I'd sure like to believe that...
...but I think it likely that the president-elect's main concern is putting together the team that can best make the change we need. That may mean including folks who may not have the best technical pedigrees, if they are strong leaders who agree to play well with others. It may mean doing a certain amount of pleasing the base for it's own sake.

He's a politician trying to do the work of the last seven or more presidential terms in two or fewer.

2. I told my girlfriend yesterday that Obama was considering HRC for SoS.
(She, being a med student, is a bit out of the non-surgery-related loop for obvious reasons). She supported Hillary during the primary, decided Obama was better than McCain, and ended up not voting due to her being post-call Nov. 4th and deciding sleep was more valuable than running up the score for Dems on the South Side of Chicago.

Her reaction was, "Wow, that would be really cool."

For what it's worth.

6. In my family, Obama already had the Clinton Democrats. But this is losing him
the independents and Republicans who voted for him.

3. 80% of Democrats are as dumb
as 80% of Republicans then.

I am sorry, but the Clintons and their administration helped get us into the Iraq war almost as much as the Bushes did. Having her as SOS would mean that absolutely nothing will change.

7. The Republicans are loving it b/c they know this will help bring many of the Republicans
back in the fold (and help garner the independent vote in future elections).

10. Do you have a problem with Biden as VP since he voted for the Iraq war and advocated for it then?

17. Not like the Clinton Administration
no he didn't. He tried to get a better resolution passed as well. And I am not just talking about the IWR, but the entire foreign policy of the 90s when the Clinton Administration played games with the Iraq WMD program instead of just getting the job done and finding another way to oust Saddam.

....Clinton fever. Thinks Bill was still part of the administration in 2003, and that most democrats are "dumb". I agree with Bart. Wish there was a cure. Thanks.

4. I was thinking Bill Clinton would make a good SOS
He's pretty well liked around the world and knows the issues and the many of the leaders.

HRC would have a lot more influence in the Senate, IMO.

And how about Kerry for Attorney General rather than SOS? He's a former prosecutor and has done a great job in Senate investigations, because of this background.

5. Who cares? Selecting certain individuals to please the base is what Republicans do.
Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 02:09 PM by ClarkUSA
And it's unwise. That is one thing Team O is not.

All this push to get Hillary a job in the Obama cabinet smacks of Clintonian entitlement again, the same that afflicted this party
right after Obama got the nomination, when her faction on the internet and in Washington, D.C. began a vulgar and blatant push
to make her VP. That went well, didn't it? :eyes:

seems to me that about 20% of the members of this board dont think this is a brilliant idea.

so it seems we're right in line.

I'm guessing you've been here before and resurrected yourself as you seem a bit too familiar with DU for only being here 10 days or so.

13. What a ridiculous poll conclusion.
Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 04:33 PM by ProSense
Favorability among Dems in August = Would be happy to see her in an Obama cabinet as SoS (and that's specifically mentioned).

Ludicrous.

Seems to me the arguments have been against Hillary as SoS, not about all cabinet positions, and she still has to submit to vetting.

Doesn't seem that crazy to me.

61% net positive among Democrats

9% among Independents

since we chatted last I found a gallup poll from 2003-2004 showing the same level of support amoungst dems.

8 in 10 favorability, 1 in 5 or 2 in 10 unfavorable amoungst dems.

http://books.google.com/books?id=WOug0pzW6_IC&pg=PA81&lpg=PA81&dq=hillary+clinton+favorable+unfavorable+amoungst+democrats&source=web&ots=b2ZlEbkj8I&sig=yz1jG4-cPukIT7N4iNHC8MwkGlo#PPA81,M1

It's the poll on the right, stamement just before header called "The Marriage Gap"

I think 80% favorable is her base number.

20. Her numbers were already
1 in 5 unfavorable among Democrats in 2003-2004. It seems that's her baseline.

Poll on the right, text just above "A marriage gap" stating 8 in 10 favorable.

favorable to Hillary Clinton.

I have a overall positive opinion of her (which does not mean she has no fault), I have no problem with her at defense or health, positions for which she has made substantial efforts in the past. SoS, not so much, because I think who Obama chooses is a signal of the type of policy he wants and do not like Clinton's philosophy.

I would say that Gallup is wildly drawing conclusions from this poll.
