Change that We Can Start to Believe in......
Obama campaigned as a change agent, and offered policies during his campaign
that would Change the Nation and Change the world.

Although he has not yet been sworn in, I'm seeing change already...
especially compared to what we have seen for 8 years....

So I will say that Obama is doing quite nicely with change.....to date, IMO.

What has changed, you might ask thus far?

Well, we've gone.....

3. Sometimes they say that folks don't appreciate what they've had
until it is gone.

My post works in reverse of that.

We should be grateful for what's coming,
based on what we've had to live through.

42. Actually, it isn't the change that he was talking about.....
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 01:43 PM by FrenchieCat
because what I have captured as contrast has nothing to do with policy.

What my OP does show, however, is that change has already started to show without Barack even trying, and that is something that we can celebrate if we are to call ourselves reasonably observant.

I will also tell those who want to believe that Obama is a "centrist" who will not bring change but just more of the same, that they are mistaken in my view, and are only showing their own impatience (which I sympathize with to an extent after all that we have been through) and nothing more.

Look, a man who saw poverty first hand as some of his first memories while living in Indonesia, is of minority status, helped organize the poor on the South Side of Chicago, attended Trinity Church for 20 years, married a Robinson originating out of South Carolina, attended Columbia and Harvard (two of the oldest established liberal universities in the United States), who has family living in huts in Africa, who not only represented some of the underserved as a Civil Rights Attorney but taught Constitutional law, ran project Vote out of Chicago to get Mosley-Braun Elected (first Black female Senator), chose to lives in Hide Park, represented the South Side of Chicago for 8 years in the State house, has never been a member of the DLC, and was adamantly against the Iraq war, is simply not a Centrist.

Meanwhile he has appointed to high ranking cabinet/advisory positions, 4 African-Americans, 7 women, and several Jews ...when he has only made about 15 appointments or so (I know, diversity no longer matters unless it does).

If he's got folks fooled, well that's mighty artful of him. Means he's playing a great game of political poker thus far....and will get far before being assaulted by the Corporate media (hopefully, he'll get his FCC pick in before they can strike any blows).

But to believe that this man is somehow not a progressive when he is still more than 45 days from taking office is simply absurd.

44. do you think that Summers and Geithner will help to dismantle Wall Street's stranglehold
on the US economy? If so, what evidence from their long and notable resumes as Wall Street insiders would lead you to believe that?

Do you think Gates and Jones will help to decrease US military spending, which now has become by itself the single largest economy in the world? If you do think so, then I want some of whatever you've been smoking.

I'm not impatient. He's not even in office yet. But I'm not an idiot and I'm not oblivious to the trajectory he has unambiguously established for his economic policy and his "national security" policy.

45. I believe that they are knowledgeable enough to know what to not do......
as I believe that brainy realists who have made previous errors can be very effective, as they are more likely not to repeat their errors...considering who is driving the agenda. Further, to blame everything on those two, when we know that it was much more complex than that (a different time, as well 8 years passed where certain steps could have been taken to keep things from getting out of hand....)is ignorant. That is like blaming Clinton for 9/11. No, not even....it's like blaming Clinton's Secretary of Defense and his NSA for 9/11 which occurred under Bush's watch.

I think that Gates is being kept in place to finish Iraq, and I consider it a wise move on Barack's part effectively and politically. As far as Jones, his role is not in reference to budgetary matters, but in reference to strategy and possible tactics of the Pentagon.

No one called you an idiot, although I suppose you implying that I'm smoking something is a snark referring to my thought process--this simply illustrates who's really who around here without further comment.

I'm glad you are not impatient, as patience appears to be what is required at this time......rationally speaking.

47. You are calling their entire careers an "error"?
First, I don't believe they view their life's work as an error.

Second, if it were true that their entire careers were one enormous error, then what would possibly make them qualified for such lofty positions of power and influence?

I think you are being delusional. I think Obama chose these people *precisely* because he wants them to continue doing what they have always done--serve the interests of the status quo.

BTW, I said IF you think Gates and Jones will participate in implementing actual change in Defense policy, you are smoking something.

Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 04:27 PM by FrenchieCat
Well, we shall see what's what.... which is the beauty of having reasonable patience prior to judging. I'm not slow on the uptake, as I was out protesting Bush BEFORE 9/11 in S.F. with only a couple of hundred of other insightful patriots. You can continue to be skeptical, and I will be the last one to blame you for it......because in the end, time will tell much better than you ever could.

I am not calling those folks' entire careers an error; you are.

Barack OBama said something that I will never forget. This was in the DNC 15 minute video that was played prior to making his acceptance speech on the 4th day of the beautifully organized convention in Denver in front of 84 thousand people, and however many millions were watching. He said that he understood why he sometimes got frustrated....he stated (paraphrasing), I realized that the best way to get something done, was to do it myself.

Obama's vision has never been status quo, not ever. One can look at his life, his career and in particular how he ran his campaign to get some perspective on the mind of this man. I believe that in enough time, you will understand this and why it might be. Till then, go at it and rail against whatever turns you on....as I am sure that in your heart of hearts you are well meaning, sincere and just simply concerned. I understand and empathize as times haven't been easy on any of us.

49. There is indeed change.
A lot of it comes from within ourselves.

You have gone from a person I had on ignore during the primaries to someone whose threads I always click on, now.

I have gone from a spiteful Anti-Obama, Hillary supporter to someone who now faces a future with Obama as our President with hope. I didn't care if Hillary got VP or SOS. I just put my trust in Obama doing what is necessary to get this country heading in the right direction.

59. New faces besides those sleeping in the White House is not what you were
promised, so the fact that you see no new faces is not news to those who have been paying attention.

What you will see over the coming days and months and years is that change is not embodied by personnel (apart from the one at the top) but by ideas. Personnel's job will be to impliment those ideas.....and let me be the first to break it to you, it is these ideas translated into policies that will be the change. I highly suspect that Rahm Emanuel was selected precisely because he is not a "new face", and because his experience at what is needed to be done in carrying forward our New President's agenda may make a difference in our lives, you and me. That difference could be what will be change for you and me.....not the fact that Rahm is an old hand at getting things done. In a way I feel silly that I'm compeled to explain this to you, because I believe that you already understand exactly....but perhaps that's just me overestimating the intelligence of folks around here.

67. Perhaps some have already lost perspective of how bad things have been......
and yet others are used to being disatisfied out of habit. After 8 years of being right of one's suspicions 100% out of 100% of the time, anything less becomes quite unexpected. :(

71. Amazing...
I have a hard time believing the election was not quite a month ago, and Obama has yet to be inaugurated.

73. You can really see the qualitative difference in the Obama folks
compared to the Bushmen in these juxtaposed photo sets.

We're dealing with a much higher caliber of intelligence now, and it SHOWS.

Thnx for the uplift, FC. I needed it.

75. Yep.....that's the beauty of it.
Obama is the anti-Bush....
to the point that I do believe that without the Bush nightmare of the last 8 years,
President Obama may not have been possible.

In other words,
It took manure to grow a flower.

83. It took the Perfect Storm and as
Matt Taibbi writes in Rolling Stone's, Nov 27th issue "How Obama Won".. we have to thank all those who played their part so well(something very much to that effect).

80. One of the best threads around in a long time
Comparing the pictures of Bush/Cheney vs. Obama/Biden and the Protest vs. Hope rally, really does it for me.

Great photo contrasts FrenchieCat and much appreciated.

82. Yes you are correct. Bush/Cheney seem exposed in that photo......
and Obama/Biden have an aura of reality and goodness about them.
