Obama did NOT buy ring for Michelle, spokesman says
Gee, the British press is lying? Who knew?

http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/12/obama_did_not_buy_ring_for_mic.html

President-elect Barack Obama did NOT buy a $33,000 rhodium ring for wife Michelle, Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said Tuesday morning, following reports in British papers that he did.

"No ring was purchased," said LaBolt.

The Daily Mail said the ring was being made by Italian designer Giovanni Bosco, to be ready by the Jan. 20 inauguration.

30. Why not? If he can afford it, and he wants it for his wife, I think he should buy it.
As poor as I am, I've never been one to think the rich should stop living their normal lives because the rest of the country is feeling a pinch.

I could be wrong, but that's just my opinion.

44. because it would be a politically tone deaf thing to do, and Obama is anything but
Obama is not perceived as, nor does he act like, a "rich" person -- at least not the kind of "rich" person who buys a $30-40K ring as a "thank you" present to his wife. One of the messages that he has been conveying in his interviews is his desire to maintain some normalcy in his life. That message resonates with people, who seem him, and his family, as more "typical" than any presidential family in generations. Buying a piece of jewelry for an amount that is greater than a lot of people earn -- a lot of people who are losing their jobs -- would be incredibly stupid. And Obama isn't stupid.

But it really sounds too expensive and not something I would see Barack buying Michelle when the economy is tanking, he is too smart for that.

22. semi-idle question... Did Georgie-Porgie ever buy Laura anything nice..
while he was in office?

And if he did, did the RW wurlitzer that is our media pound on it as the intro to every adbreak, and the lead to each "story" segment?

"when we come back"
"coming up later"
"coming up soon"
"coming up right after this break". . .

I thought not.

34. Don't tar the whole British press with the same brush as the Mail.
There's a fairly clear line in the British press between the broadsheets - the Telegraph, Times, Guardian, Independent etc - and the tabloids - the Mail, Sun, Express, Mirror etc.

The former have journalistic standards, the latter don't.

I don't know why larger pages makes a British journalist more competent or ethical, but there you have it (although the Guardian's standards didn't seem to fall when it shrunk its pages a bit...)
